Stokes sweeps major awards at Body Bar Womens FILA Cadet Nationals

Cheyenne Stokes of Oklahoma swept the major awards at the 2004 Body Bar Womens FILA Cadet Nationals in St. Joseph, Minn., March 13.
FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old.
Stokes captured the gold medal at 56 kg/123.25 lbs. and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the competition. She also earned the Most Falls award, with three falls in 7:54.
Stokes defeated Sarah Peasley of Wisconsin, 9-2 in the gold-medal finals. Placing third in the weight class was NTasha Umemoto of Oregon, who was the Outstanding Wrestler at this event last year.
Four athletes won FILA Cadet National titles for the second year in a row: Joey Miller of Oklahoma at 94.75 pounds, Kelli Rasmussen of Minnesota at 101.25 pounds, Caitlyn Chase of Illinois at 108 pounds and Nicole Darrow of New York at 114.5 pounds.
Miller defeated Whitney Coner of Washington in the finals, 4-2. Last year, Miller was the champion at 88 pounds.
Rasmussen stopped Michaela Hutchison of Alaska, 17-8 in the gold-medal match. Last year, Rasmussen was the champion at this same weight class.
Chase won the 108-pound title for the second year in a row. She scored a 12-2 technical fall over Christina Varland of Wyoming in the finals this year.
Also defending her 114.5-pound title was Darrow, who scored a 12-7 victory over Beth Johnson of Kansas in the finals this year.
Other individual champions were Kayla Chambers of Minnesota at 132.25 pounds, Sheila McCabe of California at 143.25 pounds, Melissa Simmons of Washington at 154.25 pounds and Lizz Sanders of Iowa at 170 pounds.

Hedin named Outstanding Wrestler at Body Bar FILA Junior Womens Nationals

Danielle Hedin of Hawaii claimed the 55 kg/121 lbs. weight division and was named Outstanding Wrestler in a very competitive Body Bar FILA Junior Womens Nationals, held in St. Joseph, Minn., March 14.
Hedin defeated Missouri Valley College student Debbi Sakai in the gold-medal finals, 7-5. Sakai is also a native of Hawaii, and was a FILA Junior Nationals champion in 2003.
FILA Junior athletes are 17-20 years old. The tournament featured many top college wrestlers along with some talented high school athletes who meet the age requirements.
Athletes from the U.S. womens college programs that won gold medals included Aquilla Hills at 44 kg/97 lbs., Sara Fulp Allen at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Tabithia Ramsey at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Alaina Berube at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Stephany Lee at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.
Hills, who competes for Cumberland College, won her weight class uncontested.
Fulp-Allen, a freshman at Menlo College, scored a 10-3 victory over fellow California native Laura Felix in the gold-medal match.
Ramsey, a wrestler for the Univ. of Minnesota-Morris, had a 7-2 finals victory over Lassen College wrestler Sabrina Lancelotti.
Berube, a star at Cumberland College, captured her title with a 5-1 win over Brooke Bogren, who wrestles for Missouri Valley College. Berube earned the Most Falls award for the tournament with four falls in 9:08. Berube was also a FILA Junior Nationals champion last year.
Lee, who is one of the nations top college wrestlers competing at Missouri Valley College, pinned 2003 Junior World team member Juanita Russell of New York in 2:09. Lee was a FILA Junior Nationals runner-up a year ago.
High school stars who won gold medals included Stefanie Shaw of Connecticut at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., Heather Martin of Ohio at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Samantha Lang of Oregon at 79.5 kg/175 lbs.
Shaw scored a pin over Venessa Oswalt of Ohio in the finals in 5:33
Martin pinned Kelly Branham, a talented college wrestler from Missouri Valley, in the finals in 2:04.
Lang also scored a pin in the finals, stopping Lizz Sanders of Iowa in 33 seconds. Lang was also a FILA Junior Nationals champion at this division last year.

Tomeo named Outstanding Wrestler at Body Bar Womens University Nationals in St. Joseph, Minn.

Erin Tomeo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Body Bar Womens University National Championships in St. Joseph, Minn., March 13.
Tomeo was one of four U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) resident athletes to claim individual titles at the tournament. The athletes in the competition are between 18-24 years old, and must have graduated from high school.
Each of the individual champions qualified for the Challenge Tournament at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23.
Tomeo scored a 9-5 victory in the finals over Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./Cumberland College), one of the nations best womens college wrestlers.
Other USOTC resident athletes to claim titles were Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Malinda Ripley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Chun scored a 7-2 decision over Sara Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./Menlo). Fulp-Allen is currently a freshman at Menlo College.
Ripley stopped Kierstin Hyatt (Carmichael, Calif./Missouri Valley), 3-0 in the finals. Ripley was wrestling up one weight class from her normal 51 kg/112.25 lbs.
Adams stopped Brandy Rosenbrock (Warren, Mich./Boxer WC), 3-0 in overtime in the finals. Both Adams and Rosenbrock are past members of Womens Team USA.
Two-time World silver medalist Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Cumberland College) won the gold medal at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. She scored an 11-0 technical fall over Stephany Lee (Honolulu, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) in the finals. Lee was No. 3 in the USA at 147.5 pounds last year, but has been wrestling up at 158.5 pounds this year.
The champion at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. was Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./New York AC), who pinned Tabithia Ramsey (Morris, Minn./UM-Morris) in the finals in 40 seconds. Kelly, who competes for MacMurray College, won the most falls award with three falls in 1:53. She was competing up a weight class from her normal 48 kg/105.5 lbs.
Other individual champions came from the college ranks, Mollie Keith (Aurelia, Iowa/Missouri Valley) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, Wis./UM-Morris) at 77 kg/169.5 lbs.
Missouri Valley College won the team title with 35 points, followed by Cumberland College with 24 points.

Miranda wins gold, Marano silver and Downing bronze at the Klippan Ladies Open

Klippan, Sweden - World silver medalist Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) captured a gold medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. at the Klippan Ladies Open on Sunday as the U.S. won three medals overall.
Miranda defeated four-time World medalist Inga Karamtshakova of Russia in the finals, 8-1.
Also winning medals for the U.S. were 2003 World champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and 2003 U.S. Nationals champion Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs.
In the gold-medal bout, Marano lost to her Russian opponents, 8-3.
Losing their bronze medal matches were Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Kaci Lyle (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs.
