Thunderwolves Wrestling Claim Men and Combined Team Titles

The Lakehead Thunderwolves Wrestling Team started its season on a winning note by claiming the Combined and Men's Team titles at the McMaster Invitation meet in Hamilton, Ontario on Saturday. The men's team won the title in a field of 11 teams, just beating host McMaster, while the women's team placed fifth out of 12 teams. Cumberland College of Kentucky, who will be at the Women's Championship Cup of Wrestling in two weeks in Thunder Bay, dominated the women's team title.
Placing first on the individual men's side were Dave Rector at 130 kg, Yasin Kaya at 90 kg, Steve Raine at 76 kg, and Brent Friyia at 61 kg. Placing second was Matt Lawrence at 57 kg. Placing third were Chris Camarata at 57kg, Clayton Seres at 61kg, Mitch Friyia at 65kg, and Andrew Elliot at 82kg. Lakehead's men also had a fifth and a sixth place finish that scored points towards the team championship.
Emily McCague had the Thunderwolves best individual placing for the women by coming third in the 70kg class. Lakehead also had a fourth, a fifth, and a sixth place finish that scored team points.
Lakehead Head Coach Francis Clayton said his team wrestled well in its first meet of the season under the new rules now in place in CIS/OUA wrestling. "The wrestling was good and the Lakehead wrestlers competed. With our first taste of the new rules I feel we did well."
The next test for the Lakehead men will be at North Dakota's Bison Open on November 13th while the women see action next when they host the second annual Women's Championship Cup of Wrestling on November 20th.

MENLO COLLEGE WOMEN'S WRESTLING COMPETES IN THE SUNKIST INTERNATIONAL

Menlo College was represented by four wrestlers in the prestigious Sunkist International Tournament this past weekend. Sara Fulp-Allen at 48 Kilograms or 105.5 pounds was the only wrestler to place. Sara placed 6th in a very competitive class that included the best from the US and Canada. In her first round she received a bye, in her second she won by a fall over Aquilla Hills of Cumberland College in 1:29. In the third round she decisioned Liz Short to advance to the semi finals. A confusion over a change of schedule resulted in a forfeiture to Clorissa Chun of Sunkist. In her consolation match she dropped a close 2-0, 3-1 decision to Angela Mott of Canada, placing her 6th overall.
Also competiting for Menlo at 105.5 was Rita Rameriz. After receiving a first round bye, she was the victim of two falls. She first lost to Mary Kelly of the Dave Schultz Club (4th in the competition) and then to Vanessa Brown of Canada who ended up 5th.
Menlo had two wrestlers at 63 Kilos (138.5 lbs.). Laurin Daniels lost a decision to Helen Hennick of Canada in two rounds by scores of 7-0 and 6-0. She then lost to Natasha Umemoto of Sunkist 6-0 and 7-4.
Jade Prudent lost by pin to Kaci Lyle of Sunkist in 1:52. She then dropped a second round decision to Olympian Tela O'Donnell of Dave Schultz Club 6-0, 6-0.
Menlo will travel to Vancouver, Canada November 12 and 13 to compete in the Clandsman International Tournament, hosted by Simon Frazer University.
On Sunday November 14, The Lady Oaks will compete in the Mike Clock Open at Pacific University

BOXERS GET SEASON GOING: With the Sunkist Open in the books for the returners, the Pacific womens wrestling team will have a chance to get the full squad in action with the Red/Black Intrasquad scrimmage on Friday.
ABOUT THE RED/BLACK SCRIMMAGE: The third annual scrimmage will be a chance to showcase Pacifics nationally ranked womens wrestling to the Pacific community and to Pacific wrestling alums. The scrimmage will take part during the mens wrestling alumni match on Friday.
SUNKIST KIDS OPEN: Pacifics returners saw their season start a couple of weeks early as the Boxers participated in the Sunkist Kids International Open, Saturday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz.
Defending collegiate national champion Desireé Lockhart (Sr., Port Townsend, Wash.) led the Boxers with a 2-2 record in the 51-kg. weight class. The Boxers went 3-10 as a team in the event, which featured only the four Olympic weights.
Kapua Torres (So., Kahuku, Hawaii) went 1-2 in the 51-kg. class in her first competition since the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials in May.
Lockhart opened by losing her first round match to Burnaby Mountains Sarah White in a 6-2 decision, then eliminated teammate Torres from the competition by pinning the sophomore in 3:27. She went on notch a 7-2 decision over Reginas Lisa Morin before falling to the NYACs Debbi Sakai three rounds, 13-8.
Michelle Ludwig (So., San Diego, Calif.) was Pacifics other winning, earning a first round decision over Jessica Juaco of San Diego WC.
LOCKHART, TORRES LISTED IN SENIOR RANKINGS: Desireé Lockhart and Kapua Torres have both earned spots in the first U.S. Senior Womens Rankings, released Monday by TheMat.com.
Both wrestlers are ranked in the 51-kg. (112 pound) weight class. Lockhart is ranked sixth in the poll, based in part on her performance at the Sunkist Open. Torres is ranked seventh.
Among former Boxers on the poll, Olympian Tela ODonnell is first at the 55-kg. class. Sally Roberts is fifth in the 59-kg. poll, Kaci Lyle is fourth at the 63-kg. weight class and Katie Kunimoto is fifth at 48-kg.
HEAD COACH SCOTT MILLER: Scott Miller in his third season as Director of Wrestling, and continuing the tradition of Boxer nationally ranked womens wrestling programs. Miller brings over a decade of Division I experience to the Boxer program. Prior to arriving in Forest Grove, Miller led Syracuse for three seasons before the elimination of the program in 2001. He led the Campbell University program for eight seasons, leading the Fighting Camels to the 1994 MSWA championship, and his 86 dual meet victories is the most of any Campbell coach. Miller was a two-time letterwinner at Eastern Washington, earning his degree in 1989.
