She brings a whole new perspective to wrestling

By Zach StewartSpecial to The Palm Beach Post

Saturday, December 11, 2004

LANTANA — In just one year, Kat Ramos has gone from helping out at the Palm Beach Christmas Classic tournament to being Santaluces' 140-pound entrant.

Which wouldn't be all that unusual, except that she is one of only two girls participating in the 23-team tournament field at Santaluces.

"This tournament is actually what got me into wrestling, and now here I am wrestling in it," said Ramos, who still is searching for her first victory.

"It takes a lot of dedication. I do golf and power lifting, but those aren't really endurance sports and wrestling is all endurance. So when I got into it I really liked it. It's something you can push yourself really, really hard in."

Ramos is neither the first nor the only girl on the Santaluces team. Leslie Barreiro broke the Chiefs' gender barrier six years ago and freshman Elana Soto, who will miss the Christmas Classic with a neck injury, competes in the 103-pound division. Soto actually is the more experienced of the two, having wrestled at the club level for the past four years.

"High school is harder," Soto said. "It's weird, because there's more technique when you wrestle in club, but you definitely get more endurance and conditioning at the high school level. It's also more competitive, because a high school guy doesn't want to get beat by a girl."

Ramos was pinned by Russel Delaney of Royal Palm Beach in her first match and will compete in the consolation bracket today.

Friendswood splits with Waller

By Randy Gemmer
Published December 10, 2004

FRIENDSWOOD — High school wrestling is nothing like the professional variety that most Texans are probably most familiar with. At the high school level, there are no outlandish costumes, outlandish characters or flying chairs, just extremely quick, well-conditioned athletes attired in their school colors.

Long popular in the Midwest and Northeast, high school wrestling is slowly starting to catch on in Texas. Thursday evening, the Friendswood Mustangs, in just their second year of wrestling competition, took on the Waller Bulldogs in a dual (boys and girls) meet at Friendswood gymnasium.

The Waller Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 2 in the state, defeated the Lady Mustangs, 42-6. However, on the boy’s side, the Mustangs fought back to a 47-36 win. First-year Friendswood head coach Bill Baker was pleased with the effort both of his teams showed.

“I’m very excited about how things turned out tonight,” Baker said. “The Waller girls have an outstanding team, but both our boys and girls fought very hard.”

Wrestlers compete in specific weight classes, ranging from 103 to 275 pounds on the boy’s side, and from 102 to 215 pounds for the girls. If a team doesn’t have a wrestler in a particular weight class, it must forfeit, costing the team six points.

With no boy weighing over 180 pounds, that’s a problem for the Waller Bulldogs. “We lost 30 points before the match even began,” said Waller head coach Jason Thurston, referring to his boy’s weight disadvantage. “Still, the boys went in there tooth and nail. And our girl’s team did an outstanding job.”

On the girl’s side, Waller took three out of the five matches, winning two of the matches by pins and one by points. There are three two-minute rounds per match. If a wrestler is not pinned to the mat by his or her competitor, the match is decided by the overall points leader after three rounds. Both of Friendswood’s victories on the girl’s side were by pins, as Tiffany Sanders pinned Amanda Kelso in the 128-pound class, and Julie Rogers pinned Ashley Shultz at the 165-pound level.

Sanders, a senior and the girl’s team captain, competed in the girl’s state wrestling championship last year and is vying for a spot again this year.

“She’s an outstanding athlete and very hard worker,” Baker said. “She’s looking to win a state championship this year.”

Of the seven boy’s matches that took place, Waller won the first three, before the Mustangs roared back to take the last four. Two of the Mustang wins were by pins, as 135-pound Luke Turner defeated Ryan Redman, and Nolan Stewart bested Avi Avila in the 171-pound class.

“Luke is an exciting competitor to watch,” Baker said. “He’s also a cross-country runner. He runs five or six miles a day.”

As happy as coach Baker was with his team’s effort, he was equally happy to be able to schedule a weeknight opponent at home.

“I’m thrilled the Waller Bulldogs and coach Thurston were willing to make the long trip to face us,” he said. “Wrestling is just getting a foothold down here. We have to schedule matches all over the Houston-Galveston area and beyond.”

After Thursday night’s action, the Friendswood boys are 3-3 on the year, while the girl’s record fell to 5-2. The Waller Bulldogs are 4-3 (boys) and 7-0 (girls).

Strength in numbers

Hatchet wrestling program rosters 34 grapplers for 2004-05 season

Daily News Sports 12/9/04

Tomahawk Wrestling Members of the 2004-05 Tomahawk wrestling team, from left, are: (1st row) Dan Goetz, T.J. Finn, Andy Thurman, Anthony Lampe, Ross Bauman, Blair Otterholt, Scott Harkness, Tiffani Bennett (mgr); (2nd row) Kayla Weiler (stats), Jennifer Schaper (stats), Kegan Parnell, Glenn Schultz, Megan Johnson, Kyle Schulz, Alyssa Lampe, Doug Brown, Taylor Schmidtbauer, Danielle Arnott (mgr), Becka Radtke (trainer); (third row) Rachel Musloff (stats), Emily Rossi (stats), Ashley Pietschmann (stats), Tara Waldo (stats), Mike Fleming, Kevin Murphy, Jesse Hanneman, Dan Silvernale, Jeremiah Moran, Eric Ravelo, Abel Jump, Jonelle Philbrick (trainer), Laura Schiltz (mgr), Kristin Beyer (mgr) and Amanda Lampe (video).

The collective experience provided by the Tomahawk Hatchet varsity wrestling coaches will guide twenty-five new grapplers for the 2004-05 season.

With only nine wrestlers back from last year - and the loss of a state champion - the Hatchets will look to build momentum for a late season run toward tournament success. Tomahawk finished the 2003-04 dual meet season at 3-2, third in the Lumberjack Conference behind Medford and Phillips.

"Our outlook is to learn through the year and make our push at the end," said Tomahawk co-coaches Bob Garrou and Bob Skubal, who took over the program from eight-year head coach Kurt Weyers. "We hope to have three or four wrestlers at the state tournament."

The Hatchets, who host Athens today, are seeking safety in numbers.

"We have thirty-four kids who are ready and eager to learn," added the Hatchet coaches.

Three coaches with fifty-four years of combined wrestling experience will lead the large turnout. That translates into a Hatchet wrestling program that will witness improvement each season as the younger members benefit from the veteran coaches and continue to develop.

"Our main challenge is to get the young team to believe in the Tomahawk way," concluded the veteran Tomahawk coaching staff.

The 2003-04 Hatchet wrestling campaign saw the culmination of four years of hard work and dedication pay off for graduate Josh Chelf. In his fourth year of qualifying for the state tournament - three years as a finalist - Chelf capped off an undefeated senior season while claiming the Division 2 state title at 171 pounds. His loss will be immeasurable with the leadership and commitment displayed during his exceptional high school athletic career.

Other prominent Hatchet wrestlers lost to graduation were Matt Pultz, Travis Silvernale, and Jason Schultz.

Another benchmark achieved last season for Tomahawk was sending the first girl to a Wisconsin state wrestling tournament. Alyssa Lampe fought through the competition all season on her way to qualifying for state and will try to repeat her success again this year for the Hatchets. Lampe is one of five Wisconsin girls that are rated in the Top 8 in their weight class in the initial 2004-05 USGWA preseason ratings - she ranks 2nd at 100-pounds.

Among the returning grapplers with Alyssa Lampe are 2-time conference champion Anthony Lampe, along with Kyle Schultz and Jaramia Moran.

Rival Medford won the Lumberjack Conference last year and went on to finish as runner-up to Division 2 state champion Lodi. The Tomahawk coaches cite Medford, Park Falls, and Phillips as the teams to beat this year. The Cardinals of Park Falls will be returning nearly their entire team of varsity grapplers. The Phillips Logger, following up last year's 4-1 LJC dual meet record, will hit the mat with a large number of wrestlers vying for the varsity squad.

Frisco standout adds to pin collection

Sophomore within one of school record after unbeaten weekend

01:36 AM CST on Tuesday, December 7, 2004

By MONIQUE WALKER / The Dallas Morning News

Sophomore Vanessa Epps is one pin shy of Frisco's record for career pins.

Epps went 3-0 at 138 pounds last weekend in the Lake Highlands tri-state tournament. She pinned all three opponents, wrestling for a total of 1 minute, 38 seconds.

Epps, who has 29 pins in her last two seasons, and her teammates are off this weekend as they prepare for the Texas Ladies Classic at Frisco on Dec. 17.

Frisco coach Chuck Brown said it will be one of the largest tournaments in the state for girls high school wrestling. Brown estimates more than 200 wrestlers will compete in the second-year event.

Cumberland College, which is No. 1 in the North American Women's College Poll, will wrestle No. 4 Missouri Valley at the tournament.
