Boomer wrestlers rout McGuinness
By Johnny McMahan/Senior Editor 1/18/05
Woodward used five falls to dominate Bishop McGuinness 49-18 in a 5A District wrestling match at Boomer Fieldhouse on Monday.
The match was originally scheduled last Tuesday when El Reno and John Marshall were also on hand for district matches, but McGuinness asked to postpone.
Waiting a week didn't help the Irish much.
The Boomers also received two forfeits and won nine of the 14 matches. With the win, Woodward is assured of finishing second in the district behind El Reno, the huge favorite to win the state dual championship and regular state championship in February.
El Reno is ranked as high as fifth nationally in some polls.
Woodward opened up early on the Irish. After leading 6-0 due to a forfeit, the Boomers won two straight matches for a 16-0 lead.
Kevin Branine controlled Joey DeGuisti from the start and got the fall in 2:37, then Luis Baeza whipped Alex Krause for a 12-0 major decision.
Justin Westhalen recorded the first McGuinness victory, defeating David Flores at 145 pounds 3-1 on a takedown in the final 15 seconds.
At 152 pounds, Jonathan Kraft scored three points in the last minute to edge Jason Schultz, 9-6.
Michael Comstock and Matt Johnson recorded back-to-back falls in 1:35 and 2:29 respectively to make it 28-6 Boomers. Johnson, who is ranked second in Class 4A at 160 pounds, wrestled at 171.
McGuinness won the next three matches to trim the Boomer lead to 28-18.
At 103 pound, though, McGuinness elected to forfeit to Joey Miller, a multi-time national girls champions, rather than send Augie Lombardo out to wrestle. Lombardo had weighed in at 103.
Miller is ranked sixth in Class 4A at 103 pounds.
The six points from the forfeit basically wrapped up the dual for the Boomers, who led 34-18 with three matches left.
For good measure, the Boomers won all three bouts.
Brent Bucher rolled up a big lead, then pinned Jake Maier in 5:43, John Davis routed John Donley 10-3 and Charlie Baeza made quick work of Brian Kelly in 1:34.
