CANADA GAMES CLOSEUP
Wrestlers hope to pin down medals at Games

Heidi Erdle poses at the gym, while UNB wrestlers Promise Mwenga, left, and Eric Fuenekes practise in the background.

FREDERICTON - Failing to make the basketball team may be the best thing to happen to Heidi Erdle.

The 16-year-old Fredericton High School student was cut during tryouts three years ago and was left frustrated and without a sport to call her own.

"Up until then I'd been a big basketball player, so I was kind of devastated," Erdle said. "I didn't know what to do but I really wanted to have a sport because I need to do something outside of school."

Enter wrestling.

Erdle began taking her frustration out on opponents and is looking to do more damage at the Canada Summer Games in Regina Aug. 6 to 20.

This is the first time women's wrestling will be offered at the Canada Games.

"Better late then never," said women's coach Marcia Chiasson.

There are seven other wrestlers that round out the girls side while the boys side has 11 members. With the kind of Games streak the boys have going, the girls have some catching up to do.

New Brunswick has won at least one wrestling medal at the Games since 1983 when it was held during the Winter Games and coach Pat Zwicker is confident that his wrestlers can keep that streak alive.

Among Zwicker's best and brightest medal hopefuls are St. Stephen's Chris Deering and Vincent Cormier of Bathurst - both coming off gold-medal performances at the Canada Cup in Guelph, Ont.

"So if we can keep riding the wave from their performance in Guelph last weekend, you know, I think we're looking OK," said Zwicker.

Erdle is herself coming off a podium finish at the Canada Cup. She took bronze, wrestling down one weight class (56 kilograms) while Canada Games teammate Krista Betts won gold in the 46 kilogram class.

"There wasn't a whole lot of other people from outside Canada but it was an international competition and I thought it would be a lot harder than nationals was, and I didn't place at nationals, so I really wasn't expecting to medal at all," Erdle said.

Erdle is a confessed bundle of nerves but it is mostly her own doing. Her own coach sees how much pressure the young wrestler puts on herself before a competition.

Both hope it doesn't cause Erdle to stumble in Saskatchewan.

"I do still realize that if I do bad, it's not the end of the world and I'd get over it but I just try and psyche myself up a lot before and sometimes it works in a bad way," said Erdle. "It gets me so nervous that I don't wrestle as well as I should."

But when she focuses in like she can, Chiasson and many other wrestlers in N.B. know Erdle is fierce.

"Of the girls that I talked to in the province, who I said 'Why didn't you try out?' and they said 'Well, I wasn't going to beat Heidi Erdle, so why bother?'" Chiasson said.

In fact, there were several wrestlers who earned uncontested spots on the women's team because there weren't any willing opponents.

To Chiasson, that speaks to the dedication her athletes have shown to the sport. Most on the team are club members and continue to wrestle well after the school season ends.

And Chiasson would love nothing more than to see that translate into the beginning of another medal streak.

Wrestling begins in the second week of competition Aug. 13 to 20.

The first two days, Aug. 16 and 17, will focus on team matches while the final day, Aug.18, will be individual competition.

No longer boys only

By Jeff Kolpack
The Forum - 07/29/2005

The girls from the state of Texas couldn't have jumped up and down more if they had ropes.

The Texas Lady Lone Stars won the first USA Wrestling Junior Women's Dual Tournament at the Fargodome, beating California 32-12. The significance was twofold: It was another step in the growth of the sport and it was the first team title on a national scale for girls.

"I think it's awesome for the sport to have that opportunity," Texas wrestler LeAnn Barney said. "I'd like to see more teams."

Texas won three matches in the eight-team, one-day dual. It left little doubt in the pin-happy final, winning all of its six mat matches by pin and picking up two more victories by forfeit.

California won its three matches by fall.

"I was never expecting to have a national title," Lone Stars wrestler Carrie Clark said.

Several years ago, nobody in Texas could have expected girls wrestling on the main stage of the Fargodome. It took the boys programs many years before the Texas University Interscholastic League sponsored the sport.

Texas is now one of only two states, Hawaii being the other, to have state-sponsored girls wrestling championships.

The Texas freestyle team was put together in May based on results of the state tournament.

"It was nice to finally get this set up," Texas coach Chuck Brown said. "We've been fighting for it for the last three or four years."

Clark wanted the tournament format because she wants to wrestle in college. Barney enjoyed the team concept for the education of it.

For the most part, the eight-day USA Wrestling Junior and Cadet tournaments are an individual event. That took a vacation on Thursday.

"You learn how to be on a team," Barney said. "The girls on this team are really awesome. It teaches you to be more social and how to meet new people."

The women's dual has room to grow. Brown said Michigan and New York could have had teams in the tournament.

On the state level, Texas had 46 teams compete at the 2005 state tournament. The numbers are expected to increase.

"Every year we get more girls," Barney said. "You just have to convince people, just convince them that they can be 'girly' and still do this. It's the feeling of being a part of a great accomplishment."

There was no questioning their feeling when they were presented the national title trophy. The first order of business was a team photo.

It was one for the USA Wrestling history books.

"Nobody can take that away from us," Barney said. "The biggest one is always the first one."

John Fuller/USA Wrestling

Fargo, N.D. - Seven of last year’s Junior National champions in the women’s division are undefeated and looking to repeat following the first day of action at the FargoDome.

Two of those wrestlers, Nicole Woody of Maryland at 95 lbs. and Melissa Simmons of Washington at 160 lbs., have already earned trips to the finals.

Woody won back-to-back 12-1 bouts to get to the finals, where she will face Amy Whitbeck of New York. Simmons pinned three of her four opponents, and recorded a 9-2 win. Her opponent has not yet been determined.

At 102 lbs., the finals match from last year is on pace to happen in pool competition between defending champion Rachael Holthaus of Minnesota and 2004 runner-up Alyssa Lampe of Wisconsin.

At 110 lbs., defending champion Caitlyn Chase of Illinois posted a 4-0 record. In the opposite pool, Kelli Rasmussen of Minnesota, who placed second to Chase last year, also posted a 4-0 record and is looking for a finals rematch.

The three other defending champions still undefeated after the first day of competition are Nicole Darrow of New York at 119 lbs., Deanna Rix of Maine at 128 lbs. and Na’Tasha Umemoto of Oregon at 138 lbs.

Rix wins third career ASICS/Vaughan Girls Junior Nationals title, and five claim second career crowns

7/30/2005
Gary Abbott/USA Wrestling

Deanna Rix of Maine won the 128 pound title and became the first three-time Junior Women’s National champion, with her victory at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Women’s National Championships at FargoDome on the campus of North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D., July 30.

Rix, who was named ASICS Girls High School Wrestler of the Year earlier today, scored a 10-0 technical fall in the finals over Bethany Harris of California. Rix scored three falls and three technical falls in the tournament. She was named Outstanding Wrestler of the championships.

Winning second career ASICS/Vaughan Junior National titles were Nicole Woody of Maryland at 95 pounds, Caitlyn Chase of Illinois at 110 pounds, Na’Tasha Umemoto of Oregon at 138 pounds, Melissa Simmons of Washington at 160 pounds and Juanita Russell of New York at 195 pounds.

Woody scored a dominant 10-0 technical fall over Amy Whitbeck of New York in the finals.

Chase scored a 10-0 technical fall over FILA Cadet Nationals champion Michaela Hutchison of Alaska at the 4:20 mark. Chase was a U.S. Senior Nationals runner-up in 2005.

In a battle of ASICS First Team All-Americans, Umemoto scored big points early and went on to defeat Stefenie Shaw of Connecticut, 13-4. It was the second straight year that Umemoto beat Shaw at this event, and last year Umemoto was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Junior Nationals. Umemoto was a 2004 U.S. Nationals champion on the Senior level and Shaw was fourth in the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Simmons scored a pin in the finals over Amy Havens of California in 1:45. Simmons was sixth at the 2005 U.S. Senior Nationals.

Russell wasted no time in winning her gold-medal match, pinning Brittany Delgado of South Carolina with a headlock in just 12 seconds.

A number of talented athletes who have had other age-group national achievements won their first Junior Nationals title.

In another battle of ASICS First Team All-Americans, Tatiana Padilla of California defeated 2004 Junior National champion Nicole Darrow, 10-1 at 119 pounds. Padilla was a 2005 FILA Cadet Nationals champion.

At 148 pounds, Vanessa Oswalt of Ohio edged Amberlee Ebert of Wisconsin by a 3-2 margin. Oswalt was second at the 2004 Junior Nationals, and was sixth at the 2005 U.S. Senior Nationals.

Winning her first Junior Nationals title was freshman Joey Miller of Oklahoma, who edged Cammie Yeik of Washington in the finals, 9-7 at 95 pounds. Miller has won a FILA Cadet National title.

In a wide open battle at 175 pounds, Desiree Memea of Hawaii stopped Toni Copeland of New York in the finals, 8-7. It was the second straight year that Copeland placed second at the Junior Nationals.

At 220 pounds, Lakia Henderson of Florida won a three athlete roundrobin for the title. Each of the athletes had a 1-1 record in the roundrobin, but Henderson won the gold on the strength of a victory over runner

Paloma Basulto of California pinned Lauren Birks of Texas in the finals in 4:13, leading 8-0 at the time of the fall.

This is the fourth year that a women’s division is featured at the Junior Nationals. There was a record number of entries, 178 women representing 30 states. The previous record was set last year with 144 entries in the competition.

The women’s weight classes have changed for 2005, moving up from nine divisions to 11 divisions.
