Local girls ready for Invitational
Los Angeles Newspaper Group 2/1/06
Kelsi Nervik of Mayfair High and Lacey Clair of Cypress are the first known girls wrestlers from the area to place at the CIF Southern California Championships on Jan. 21 and earn berths to the California Girls Invitational Tournament beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday at Hanford West High.
Wrestling continues at 10 a.m. Saturday at the same site.
Reo Avila of Mayfair, who didn't place last week, will also compete at the event that will attract the best wrestlers from the Southern and Northern section regional tournaments.
The competition is double elimination, and the top eight wrestlers in each weight class earn medals.
At the Southern regional, Nervik placed fourth at 132 pounds and Clair finished eighth at 154.
This weekend's event is recognized by CIF but is not considered a state championship because not all sections have a championship tournament.
