Students travel to wrestling meet

A group of Vietnamese students left the country last weekend for the World Students’ Wrestling Championship in Mongolia.

Wrestling trainers said medal hopefuls for the Vietnamese side are promising players Nguyen Thi Hang and Man Ba Xuan. The two have won local medals and have international experience.

Hang won a silver medal in the girl’s 48kg category at the World Junior Wrestling Championship last year. Xuan is a champion from the 23rd Southest Asian Games who also competed at the World Students’ Meet South Korea in 2002.

Nigeria, others for C’wealth Championships

Canada, England, India, Malta, Nigeria, NewZealand, Pakistan, Scotland, South Africa, Uganda and Wales, have been confirmed by the Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling Association, as Commonwealth nations that will participate at the “2006 Commonwealth Wrestling championships” in Glasgow.

The confirmation was carried, Wednesday in a media release made available to Tidesports, by the Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling association.

The release had it that, it is the first time in the history of the Association, that the youth championship will be held for mate and female wrestlers, in the age bracket of 16-18 years.

Meanwhile, the Scottish Association, a member of the British Wrestling Association is hosting the championships in the city of Glasgow. The Commonwealth youth championships will be conducted in Olympic freestyle wrestling weight classes used for these championships are Fila Cadet weights.

For males it will be in 39-42kg, 46kg, 50kg, 54kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 76kg, 85kg and 85-100kg, while that of the female are in 36-38kg, 40kg, 43kg, 46kg, 49kg, 52kg, 56kg, 69kg, 65kg, and 65-70kg.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Executive Committee for The Commonwealth Amateur Wrestling Association, Mr. Josip Mrkoci, thanked the organising committee in Glasgow and the Scottish Wrestling Association for hosting the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Wrestling Championships, which will help to promote the Olympic Freestyle Wrestling.

Similarly, the President of the Commonwealth Games council Mr. Louise Martin, stated “we are delighted that the city of Glasgow was chosen to host the Commonwealth Youth Wrestling Championship, as, Glasgow has been very successful in hosting other Commonwealth sporting event, and added that, it is currently a candidate city for 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The President of FIELA (World wrestling governing body) Mr Raphy Martinetti recently declared the bodies support towards the effort of Scotish Wrestling Association in hosting the championships and congratulated the (CWAWA for organising the inaugural Commonwealth Youth Wrestling Championships.

Also, president Michael Cavanagh, the president of the Scoltish Wrestling Association, said “we look forward to hosting the Commonwealth Youth Championship, we are thrilled that the first championship is being held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, as Glasgow was also the site of the first senior Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in 1985”.
