President of the Nigeria Amateur Wrestling Federation (NAWF), Austin Igwe Edeze, who disclosed that the female team won the championship shield as the best in the continent, while their male counterpart captured two silver medals in the championship, said that $39 000 was expended on the Pretoria championship by the Association. Edeze who appealed to the government for assistance to sponsor 10 wrestlers and four officials that will participate at the Championship in China next month, said that it was the International Wrestling Federation (Fila) who invited the federation to the championship in the light of their outstanding performances so far. The executive board of NAWF regards the Africa Wrestling Championship as the melting point of ranking wrestlers in Africa, hence the board did expend $39 000 to sponsor four male and seven female wrestlers with five officials to South Africa where we record this feat, he said. Edeze said Nigeria won the female shield as the best overall in Africa; as an addition to the nine medals won alongside their male counterpart at the Pretoria meet. He also said that the NAWF board shortly after its inauguration in May 2005 sponsored four wrestlers and three officials to the Commonwealth Nations wrestling championship in Cape Town, South Africa, where the team won two silver medals, and three million naira expended on the championship. Secretary of the Federation, Usikaye Yemi told Trustsports that the female wrestlers won four gold medals, two silver and one bronze medal, while their male counterpart won two silver medals. He also said that the second edition of Governor Sam Egwu Open Wrestling Championship in male and female categories will be holding between 9 August and 15 August in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State and is being sponsored by the governor at the cost of $39 000.Daily TrustMM/JB
