London's Katie Patroch pinned down the gold medal in the women's 59-kilogram division and London-Western Wrestling Club teammate Terri McNutt earned bronze at 51 kilos at the prestigious Sunkist Kids International Open in Tempe, Ariz.

Patroch, a recent Lakehead University graduate teaching at Westminster secondary school, pinned Jazzie Barker of Calgary in the rush for gold. She also won her semifinal handily, pinning Othella Lucas of the New York Athletic Club one minute and 50 seconds into the first round.

"This is a big win for Katie," said Ray Takahashi, London-Western head coach. "It's a great start to the season to win this tournament, especially since it counts for national team points."

Patroch is scheduled to compete in the Clansmen Open in Burnaby, B.C., Nov. 3-4.

McNutt, a former Western Mustangs captain, pinned Kapua Torres of Pacific University in Stockton, Calif., in the third round of their bronze medal match after splitting the first two rounds 6-0 and 0-5.

As Lakehead's varsity wrestlers prepare for this weekend's University of Calgary Open; it's time to take an in-depth look at this year's teams.

This years women’s varsity team will be without last years OUA silver medalist, CIS Bronze Medalist, and Canadian National Championship Silver Medalist; Katie Patroch. Also missing will be OUA Bronze medalist Michelle Gorrie.

However, this year’s team should still be challenging for a top three finish at the OUA championships. The Wolves will be lead by Emily McCague and World Junior Bronze medalist Tasha Eady. New faces include National Juvenile silver medalist Nicole Plummer, who will be a welcome addition to our team.

Sunkist Kids ASU International Open

October 12-14, 2006, Tempe, Arizona

-London-Western women team members, Katie Patroch (59 kg) and Terri McNutt (51 kg) are scheduled to compete at the Sunkist Open Wrestling Tournament in Tempe, Arizona, Oct 14/06. The early season tournament is reputed as one of the most competitive events for men and women as it is used to select US competitors for their upcoming international tours. For Canadians, the Sunkist Open can be counted for National Carding points.

London native and Saunders S.S. graduate, Katie Patroch, has returned to London and now teaches at Westminster SS. Patroch captured the silver medal in the 59 kg class at the Senior National Open in May, 2006. McNutt, who is a graduate student in the School of Nursing at Western took the bronze medal at the Senior National Open at 51 kg. She finished a stellar five year career at Western winning the 2006 CIS Championships and was named Western's top female athlete of the year as recipient of the FWP Jones Trophy. Patroch had an outstanding varsity career at Lakehead University and is a gold medallist at the 2003 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.

"Having Katie and Terri" in the same room is great for Western", remarked Coach Ray Takahashi. "They both have high expectations for themselves and their presence and work ethic will no doubt rub off on the varsity team."

Patroch was coached by current mustang assistant, Harry Geris in high school, while McNutt was coached by Tom Mastantuono in Kingston.

Two London-Western wrestlers take medals at the prestigious Sunkist Kids International Open, October 14.

Katie Patroch won the individual gold medal in the 59 kg women’s division with three pins. Patroch, who placed second in the Senior Canadian Open in 2006, beat Jazzie Barker of Calgary by pin in the final. In the semifinal, Patroch also won by pin over Othella Lucas (New York Athletic Club) at 1:50 of the first round. Patroch, won her first match by pin over Na`tasha Umemoto (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club) 1-0,1:31 after advancing out of the preliminary round with a first-round bye. “This is a big win for Katie”, said coach, Ray Takahashi. “It’s a great start to the season to win this tournament especially since it counts for National team points.” Patroch is scheduled to compete in the Clansmen Open in Burnaby, B.C., Nov 3, 4, which will feature top Canadians and International teams from U.S., Japan and Europe. Patroch had a successful university career at Lakehead University who has returned to London and now teaches at Westminster SS. Patroch, who attended Saunders SS was then coached by Harry Geris who now assists with the mustangs.

The former mustang captain, won by decision over Liz Martindale (Brock University) 6-0,8-5, after dropping a close decision to U.S. Olympian, Jenny Wong (Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club 2-0,1-1. McNutt advanced earlier by a win by decision over Katherine Fulp-Allen (Menlo College) 6-0,2-2,4-1.
