FAIRMONT — Buccaneer seniors Brittany Woodall and Daniel Dilworth both placed eighth in last weekend’s Winner’s Choice Wrestling Tournament at Fairmont, pacing the Bucs to a 22nd -place finish in the 32-team tourney. Both wrestlers finished with a 3-3 record for the weekend.
Woodall, who holds an 18-10 record this season, started the tournament well, defeating three of four of her 112-pound competitors. She lost by decision in her final two matches, though, to be eliminated from the tournament and wrap up an eight-place showing.
Dilworth (18-10 ) had a similar start in the 215-pound division, pinning three of his first four opponents . But he fell to the eventual fifth and seventh-place finishers in his final two matches to secure the eighth-place trophy at the end of the weekend.
Levi Bender (10-8 ), a 130-pound junior for the Bucs, was able to rack up a 3-2 record for the tournament, but his fall to Kevin Courtwright of West Greene in the fourth consolation round eliminated his hopes of a finish in the top eight.
Sophomore Brock Hyre (14-12 ) also wrestled well in the in the 140-pound weight class, but his loss to eventual seventh-place finisher Josh Anderson of Musselman in the fourth consolation round put him out of placing contention.
Woodall and Dilworth, the only seniors for Buckhannon, have done well piloting the Bucs this season. Both lead the team with records of 18-10 on the season and have fared well in tournament action.
The Buccaneer wrestlers travel to Huntington this weekend for the WSAZ Invitational and then head to Braxton County for a quad on Wednesday.

Grapplers 1-2 in competitive home quad

TENNERTON — The Buckhannon-Upshur High School wrestling team has shown that they have a talented roster this season that has the potential to take down any team on any given day.

But when head coach JP Tenney’s troops faced off against three tough opponents on senior night Friday, they could only muster a 1-2 record, taking down Nitro High School but falling to Fairmont Senior and Huntington. The two losses came from teams with impressive individual talent this year.

Fairmont Senior and Huntington are both ranked in the top 12 in the latest West Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association poll, with Huntington filling the 11th spot and Fairmont Senior following in 12th. Individually, both teams have five wrestlers ranked in the top eight in their weight divisions.

Buckhannon has just one wrestler ranked in the top eight in the same poll. Brittany Woodall, a three-time state meet qualifier and two-time regional champ, is currently ranked eighth in the 112-pound weight class.

The Buccaneer grapplers started their evening against Huntington High School, a team with five returning state-meet qualifiers, including two who finished in the top five last year.

Elijah Shanholtz, Robbie Cogar, Levi Bender and Brock Hyre all wrestled to decision victories against their opponents, but it wouldn’t be enough to combat Huntington’s heavyweight dominance. Huntington’s wrestlers took down the hosts in every division over 140 pounds by major decision or pin fall.

The match of the dual was a 125-pound brawl between Buckhannon’s Robbie Cogar and Huntington’s Bobby Johnson. Both grapplers were state-meet qualifiers last year, and Cogar was Buckhannon’s lone NCAC champion.

Cogar overpowered Johnson, scoring multiple takedowns to secure a comfortable 9-2 decision.

Buckhannon rolled through an under matched Nitro squad in their second dual, winning all but three weight divisions. Matt Floyd, Brittany Woodall and Cogar all won by pin fall, while Shanholtz won a 7-4 decision in the 125-pound division.

Finally against Fairmont Senior, a team with five returning state-meet qualifiers and two top six finishers last year, Buckhannon cracked under the pressure, 58-15.

Matt Floyd was the only Buccaneer to take down his opponent, scoring a pin in 3:05 over Beau Robinson in the 112-pound class.

Floyd (2-1), Shanholtz (2-0), Cogar (2-1), Levi Bender (3-0), and Hyre (2-1) all finished with winning records for the quad. Woodall finished with a 1-1 slate.

Before the quadrangular began, Buckhannon’s three seniors and their parents were recognized. Brittany Woodall, Daniel Dilworth and Egon Hampl are the lone seniors for the Buccaneers and provide solid leadership for the young, improving group.

The Buc grapplers will travel to East Fairmont on Saturday for the NCAC championships. Sophomore Robbie Cogar will be defending his title and wrestling is set to start at 10 a.m.

The Buccaneer seniors:

Daniel Dilworth: NCAC runner-up

Egon Hampl: Foreign exchange student

Five Buccaneer wrestlers qualify for states

WESTON — Twelve Buccaneer wrestlers stepped into Lewis County High School on Saturday with dreams of a trip to the state tournament in their heads.

For five of those wrestlers, those dreams became reality.

Brittany Woodall, Robbie Cogar, Brock Hyre, Daniel Dilworth and T.J. Strader are all Huntington-bound — placing in the top four in their weight classes and earning a spot in West Virginia’s biggest tournament.

The 60th annual State High School Wrestling Tournament begins Thursday night and goes through Saturday at the Huntington Civic Center.

Though none of Buckhannon’s grapplers can call themselves regional champions this year, head coach JP Tenney will be sending both of his seniors, a junior and a pair of sophomores to Huntington to take on the state’s best wrestlers.

Five Bucs were seeded in the top four prior to the meet, and four of those held that position to move on.

Brittany Woodall — who wasn’t a top four seed in the 119-pound weight class —surprised few when she wrestled her way to a third-place finish. Woodall was a regional champ last year and refused to be held out of the state meet her senior year.

Woodall has now qualified for the state tournament all four of her years at Buckhannon, and hopes to use that experience on the mats this weekend.

Like Woodall, Robbie Cogar and Brock Hyre have state championship experience, both making their second appearance this year — as sophomores.

Cogar, who holds a 24-21 record as of Saturday, rolled through his three matches to end up in the runner-up spot in the 125-pound division. Cogar, a freshman regional champ last year at 103, will carry more experience into this year’s state tournament and hopes to improve on his fourth-place finish last year.

Hyre cruised to a third-place finish Saturday, improving his 24-19 record in the process. Holding a third-place seed going into the meet, Hyre performed to expectation and punched his ticket to states for the second straight year.

Daniel Dilworth, a 189-pound senior for the Bucs, improved on his third-place seed to finish second on Saturday and earn his first trip to states. Dilworth holds Buckhannon’s best record this season, at 30-18, and will ride that momentum to Huntington for his final meet.

Heavyweight T.J. Strader will also be heading to the state championship for the first time this year, holding onto fourth place in the 285-pound weight class to secure his spot. Strader, a junior for Buckhannon, has racked up a 17-12 winning record this season and is poised for a strong performance this weekend.
