It is officially a dynasty.
The Caprock Lady Longhorns won their fourth consecutive UIL girls wrestling state championship Saturday in Austin, joining the elite of the elite.

The Panhandle regularly produces state champions in numerous sports, but consistency at this level is rare.

As the saying goes, it is hard to get to the top, but it is even harder to stay there.

Consider the accomplishment: Four years is a high school athlete's career, from freshman to senior.

Winning one state title is something a student-athlete will look back on proudly - even brag to the grand kids about someday.

How about bringing home the gold four years in a row?

For a high school athlete, it doesn't get any better than that.

The Lady Longhorns have helped put girls wrestling on the map - or mat, as the case may be - and they have accomplished as much as any program in any sport.

Congratulations, ladies. You have created a standard of athletic success that few have experienced.

Long live the dynasty.

Five B-U wrestlers compete at state tourney

HUNTINGTON — The 60th annual High School State Wrestling Tournament would be the last for Buckhannon’s two senior wrestlers, and just a stepping stone for three B-U underclassmen participating in the event.

Five Buccaneer wrestlers traveled to the Huntington Civic Center last weekend for the three-day tournament that would determine the state’s top wrestlers.

Though none of head coach JP Tenney’s Bucs placed this year, his two seniors earned a win apiece at West Virginia’s highest level to close out their high school wrestling careers.

Seniors Brittany Woodall and Daniel Dilworth, along with sophomore Brock Hyre all went 1-2 at the state tournament. Robbie Cogar and T.J. Strader both went 0-2 for the weekend to end their seasons.

Woodall was the only Buc to stand victorious after first-round action. She won an 8-0 major decision over Hedgesville’s Jon Kriss on Thursday night, placing her into the championship quarterfinals. A 3:29 pin by Brooke High School’s Daniel Felton, however, sent her to the consolation bracket where she lost a close 4-1 decision to Nicholas County’s Marcus Evans.

Woodall graduates as a four-time state qualifier and two-time regional champion.

Dilworth, a senior making his first appearance at the state tournament, lost his opening match by pinfall to Hedgesville’s Jordan Golden. He rebounded, however, in the first consolation round by pinning Morgantown’s Nick Norris in the first period. In the second round he fell to Minuteman J.R. Kerns by a slim 2-0 decision to close out his B-UHS wrestling career with a 31-20 record this season.

Brock Hyre, a talented sophomore for the Bucs, was also pinned in first-round action by Parkersburg South’s Hueston Kellar. He avenged the loss in the consolation round by notching a major decision, but ended the tournament on his back in the next round against Wheeling Park’s Seth Bumgardner.

Robbie Cogar, a fourth-place finisher in last year’s tournament, didn’t have quite the success this season in the 125-pound weight class. Cogar lost a close decision to Nic Busch of Parkersburg South in opening-round action before being pinned by a junior from Riverside High School.

Buccaneer junior T.J. Strader also had a tough tournament, going 0-2 against a pair of seniors. Strader lost in the first round by pinfall to Cabell Midland’s Alex Neal, only to lose a 7-0 decision against Fairmont Senior heavyweight Joe Satterfield in the first consolation round.

As a team, the Bucs finished in 27th place in the 33-team field with eight points. Parkersburg High School won the meet with 201 points, edging East Fairmont’s Bees by a mere nine points.

Esquivel a bronze medalist in provincial wrestling meet

The Queen of Angels school and Cowichan Valley Wrestling Club programs may be small on a provincial scale, but are becoming well-known for big-time results.

The provincial meet at Surrey’s Guildford Park Recreation Centre ran Thursday through Saturday and Carmen Esquivel of Queen of Angels turned heads by placing third in the girls’ 51-kilogram category.

“This is an amazing feat for her, as she is only in Grade 9 and she was wrestling girls who were in Grades 10, 11 and 12,’’ noted coach Nick Zuback.

During the bronze medal match, Esquivel beat the six-time Island champ. It was a rematch from the Island finals in Campbell River when Esquivel lost a close decision.

With the result, Esquivel will be going to Ontario in April for the national championships.

The provincial competition is enormous, with some 1,000 wrestlers taking part in 750 matches during the three days. The agenda one day went from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. non-stop.

“It’s the biggest tournament they have in B.C.,’’ Zuback pointed out. “And there’s no such thing as tiers. You’re going with the schools that have 2,000 or 3,000 kids.’’

A total of 11 Queen of Angels and Cowichan Valley club wrestlers participated and all did extremely well.

Ben Mesa (48 kg boys) and Hana Mulder (64 kg girls) were both eighth in their categories. Geoffrey Boyd (41 kg boys) was 15th.

“It averages 25-30 kids in each category,’’ Zuback pointed out.

Travis Carey of Kelsey was 15th in 78 kg boys, Amanda Danesin of Cowichan secondary top 20 in 54 kg girls and Brandon Cook of Duncan Christian school top 25 in boys’ 60 kg among the club wrestlers.

Queen of Angels’ Aaron Kang was top 20 in boys’ 45 kg, Cory Danesin top 20 in boys’ 48 kg and Dane Frost top 20 in boys’ 54 kg. Clarissa Peter couldn’t finish the competition due to injury.
