These were new rules interpretations that came into effect at the World Cup – no big changes but definitely some things to be aware of:

Out of Bounds
If you back straight out of bounds – it will be 1 point and a caution against you
If you are being driven out of bounds and you turn and bail out of the hold – it will be 1 point and a caution against you
Zone
If your opponent is on there knees (lets say in a Front Head Lock) and you spin behind them but in the process you step out of bounds – even though you stepped out you will be awarded 1 point – this is only if you opponent is on the mat – if standing it will be a point against you
In a rear tripod situation – your opponent is behind you, no points are given until your elbow, knee or HEAD touch the mat – prior to the World Cup it was only the elbow and the knee
If you drive your opponent from their feet to their butt – it used to be that the official would hold the call and if you then drove them to exposure they would give you 2 points only – know they will give you 1 point for the takedown and 2 points for the exposure

Clinch
Defense – your hands can be anywhere on the back – close to the shoulders, close to the spin, close to the lower back
Defense – your feet – you must present one foot in the center of the circle and the trail leg must be out of the circle
Defense and offense will only be given 1 warning for getting in the start position – after that warning the next time the other wrestler will be awarded the point, and the period

Maika Watanabe of Napa won the 51-kilogram division at the Missouri Valley Showcase of Women’s Wrestling last week. Watanabe, who went to Vintage and wrestles for Missouri Valley College, won all three matches in the round-robin format in her class.

The Lady Vikings are coached by Carl Murphree, a former Vintage coach, former director of the Napa Valley Wrestling Club and founder of the ASICS Napa Valley Girls Classic.

Combs wins state title

1/31/07

People look at Sarah Combs and see a typical high school student. Some might notice her strong build and muscular arms, but few would look at her and think wrestling state champion. But that is indeed just what she is after winning the title this past weekend at Lakeland.

With little competition in the girls class in North Florida, Sarah normally takes on the boys on the mat. "That helps make her a better competitor and gives her an added edge when she does get to wrestle girls," said Coach Jason Blair.

The talented junior finished in third place last year and set her goal to improve this season. "She works hard and is committed in the weight room and on the mat to improving her skills. It just kills the boys when she goes out there and pins them," said Blair. During the season, Sarah has bested several opponents of the opposite sex and has amassed a winning record.

She went undefeated with three wins during the state meet. In the title match, Sarah faced off with an opponent that was ranked number three in the nation. They battled to a 4 to 4 tie in regulation time and sent the match to overtime, where Sarah won by scoring a two point take down to clinch the match 6 to 4.

Coaches from the national Team Florida Team were so impressed with her strong performance that they invited her to join the team which travels around the country, competing against other states.

Krista Smith also made the trip and finished with a 2 and 2 record. While the girls were down state with Coach Preston, the rest of the team competed in their final tune up before the district tourney. The Cats finished in second place at the Terry Parker Duals.

"We dominated and wrestled well, beating all the Florida schools and only losing to a talented team from New Jersey. Our team record was 4 and 1 with wins over Parker, First Coast, Fernandina Beach, and Bishop Kenny," said Blair.

The Wildcats top wrestlers included brothers Timmy and Robert Mason, who went undefeated with 5 and 0 records, along with Josh Trippett. Josh Hodges and Blake Yarbrough also has good outings, finishing with 4 and 1 records.

"We have really turned it on and are hitting our peaks as we look forward to districts at Suwannee this weekend. Sarah and all her teammates will be representing Baker County in the tough competition," said Blair.

Indians pin down state title

VERO BEACH - You can excuse Dr. Sam Cassara's throat for being a little raspy.

And it has nothing to do with the suddenly Siberian weather.

The chiropractor who doubles as the girls' wrestling coach at Vero Beach High School recently had good reason for straining his vocal cords - cheering on his squad to a state championship.

"We just dominated all year," Cassara said. I credit that to all the girls' dedication and determination to be a champion."

After finishing third at state last season, the Indians used that disappointment as a motivating factor, sweeping all six tournaments they entered in before making their way to Kissimmee.

"It was surprising first of all," Cassara said. "The closest in points from second to first was 70 points all year.

"You have to have skill and a little bit of luck."

The Indians didn't need any four-leaf clovers, competing against the best wrestlers in Florida. One hundred thirty-one girls from 46 schools took to the mat, but Vero Beach proved to be up to the test.

"This is the first year we had a complete team," Cassara said.

Leading the way for the Indians was Janexis Rodriguez. The third-year wrestler brought a perfect 13-0 record into the tournament.

Wrestling in the 114-pound weight class, the junior advanced all the way to the finals before finally being taken down.

Her performance was still good enough to earn a second-place finish.

Junior Macy Evans also came in undefeated at 13-0. The second-year wrestler competing at 132 overcame Jasmine Parra of Poinciana High School to take home the crown.

Also competing in just her second season, Mercedes McKenzie brought a stellar 7-3 record to state. At 137, she made it to the finals before running into 2006 state champion Briesja Gallo of Osceola High School.

The pride of the 147-pound weight class, Savanna Duffy came into this season looking to improve on a second-place finish at state last year.

The junior stormed through the competition, racing to a 10-0 record during the year. At state, Duffy continued her winning ways, pinning Coral Pitter to take home the gold.

"She earned a title that she'll carry with her the rest of her life," Cassara said. "It's an award that will constantly remind her that she met her goals and that she is a person who can find the determination to meet those goals."

Duffy was happy to finally get the so-called monkey off her back.

"It was great," Duffy said. "I wanted to get first for three years.

"It was also a big relief after all that hard work to get first."

Upstart Bridget Siers looked to build on Vero's momentum. Although entering the tournament with a 3-7 record, the junior advanced all the way to the finals where she met last year's state champ, Katie Crouch.

Siers contest with the defending titleholder proved to be one of the most entertaining of the competition.

"It was the most exciting match of the entire match," Cassara said. "Everybody was going crazy. It kept going back and forth with near pins.

"Katie avoided a near pin millimeters away from the mat for 35 seconds. It was the first time she was close to being pinned."

Crouch eventually pulled out the win, but Siers earned a well-deserved second place.

Coming into this season, half of Cassara's squad had never wrestled before. One of those was Kristine Hamilton. At 173, she rumbled to a 3-1 record during the year, showing signs of what was to come at state.

Hamilton worked through the brackets, advancing all the way to the semifinals. She lost a tough match to Sarah Combs from Barron-Collier, putting her in the consolation round.

The junior took on Kristen King from Seminole High School, winning the contest to earn a respectable third-place showing.

Providing a dose of senior leadership all season, Janna Ivey looked to defend her crown from a year ago. At 191, she put together a 9-2 record for the season and used that momentum to defeat Evettah Samuels, adding another state title to her resume.

"She definitely was a champion the first time," Cassara said. "This puts it in concrete that she's a true champion."

In the 217-pound class was another newcomer, Tyrika Shuren. Despite her inexperience, the junior defeated Anderson Hill from Poinciana to take home third place.

Looking to make her return to state a memorable one was Amber James. The 265-pound senior was injured last season after finishing third the previous campaign.

Taking on Jessica Zevallos of Poinciana, James quickly took control of the match, pinning her opponent in just over a minute.

The overall outcome at state was extra special for Duffy, who used to attend her sister Erica's matches at Vero Beach.

"It was different this year because of our team," Duffy said. "We knew we had a chance at state if we tried even harder.

"It was exciting. We got scared at first because when they first announced (the scores) we weren't ahead by much. In the end, we beat them all by lot. We were over 100 points ahead."

As for Cassara, the man who has helped to nurse the program along since its infancy, the win not only guaranteed Vero's spot as one of the best teams in the country, but also it gives them an edge in repeating next season.

As defending champions, the Indians get to host next year's tournament.

"It'll be a lot of work, but I think it will be prestigious for us," Cassara said.

While the season is over for the team, several members of the squad still have work to do. Each girl that finished in the top three in their weight class earned a shot to go to nationals later in the year in Michigan.

"It'll give them exposure to colleges looking for girl wrestlers," Cassara said. "It'll give them a chance to earn scholarships if they do well."

Tourney-bound

It’s been two months since the high school wrestling season ended.

However, for three Kodiak High School wrestlers the season goes on.

Jimmy Eggemeyer, Michelle Canete and Chloe Ivanoff are set to become the first wrestlers from Kodiak to travel outside the state for a collegiate-style wrestling tournament after the regular season.

Eggemeyer will be competing at the Junior Nationals in Virginia, while Canete and Ivanoff head to the United States Girls Wrestling Association (USGWA) National Tournament in Detroit. Both tournaments begin this weekend.

The last time the trio was on the mat in competition nature was at the state tournament.

Eggemeyer, a junior, captured the 125-pound state title Feb. 3. One week later, Canete and Ivanoff became Kodiak’s first girl state champions at the state tournament sponsored by the USGWA.

The three are now set to conquer new challenges. In doing, so the tournaments are helping the Kodiak program.

“We are trying to improve our wrestling program,” Kodiak coach Pat Costello said. “Our guys have been real hot for quite a few years. Our girls are coming up. We have some younger girls coming along in a few years to hopefully follow in these girls’ footsteps and maybe get Alaska to start a high school girls tournament.”

For the girls, this tournament — the largest high school girls tournament in the nation — gives them a chance to see where they stack up against other girls around the country.

It will be a change considering they were pitted against guys for the majority of their matches this season.

“The girls have a special treat, because they wrestle boys 95 percent out of the year,” Costello said. “Now they are getting a chance to compete with other girls with similar backgrounds from all over the country.

“Most girls that show up are the good ones. Beginners don’t usually go to these tournaments. It will give them a chance to see how other girls wrestle and how they compete.”

Seeing different wrestlers excites both Canete, a junior, and Ivanoff, a freshman.

“It’s going to be fun to see different styles and moves that I haven’t seen before,” Canete said.

“It’s going to be really cool to see the other styles of people around the Lower 48 and how I will go up against the girls,” Ivanoff added.

Kent Bailo, the director of the USGWA, invited Canete last year, but she couldn’t make the trip.

This year, Bailo was at the girls tournament in Anchorage and once again issued an invite to both Canete and Ivanoff.

“He (Bailo) thinks it will be a real good stepping-stone to see how they match up against other girls,” Costello said.

For Canete, this is just a dream.

“I would have never imagined having wrestling take me out of state,” said Canete, who will be making her first trip to another state besides Alaska.

Eggemeyer finished the high school season without a blemish in the loss column winning 42 consecutive matches en route to Kodiak’s first state title since 2004.

“Jimmy, as a junior, is looking to go to college and this will give him an avenue to see how he competes with other kids at the same level,” Costello said.
