OCU signs Mercer of Lawrence, Kan.; Peterson of Lake Mills, Iowa
4/11/2007
Chandra Peterson earned 57 wins in her high-school career. |
OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City University has signed Emma Mercer of Lawrence, Kan., and Chandra Peterson of Lake Mills, Iowa to its new womens wrestling program.
Mercer won the USGWA girls state championship at 123 pounds as a senior. She posted a state-record 50 wins in her career at Lawrence High School (Kan.). She was a 2005 Womens Freestyle Duals all-American.
At OCU, Mercer is expected to wrestle at 121 pounds.
She thought her wrestling career would be over until we added our program, OCU coach Archie Randall said. She is a smart athlete. Shell have to change from folkstyle to freestyle.
Peterson is a five-time USGWA Iowa state champion. Peterson was named Iowa Wrestling Federation womens athlete of the year as a sophomore and an honorable-mention TheMat.com/ASICS girls all-American as a junior. Peterson was ranked eighth in the preseason USGWA rankings at 118 pounds this season.
She was also fourth runner-up at the Iowa Junior Miss Pageant.
We feel Chandra will be an asset to our young program because she has wrestled in Iowas boys division, Randall said. She is continuously hustling. She is a hard worker. She is well-rounded and an outstanding student.
OCU will begin competing in womens wrestling next season.
