Wrestling: Igali promises to present a solid team

TECHNICAL Adviser of the Nigeria Amateur Wrestling Federation (NAWF), Daniel Igali has assured that his team of wrestlers for the African Wrestling Championship which holds from 25 - 27 May in Cairo Egypt would be ready in the next two weeks.

Igali thought that he already had a team for the All Africa Games and the African Wrestling Championships when he invited 48 wrestlers to the National Camp in Abakaliki that lasted for three months, but was thrown aback weekend when the known champions in all three style of the sport crashed at the just concluded 3rd Gov Sam Egwu tourney in Abakaliki.

Appraising the wrestlers’ performance at the recent competition, the Nigerian-born Canadian Olympic Champion said, “I think the performance of the wrestlers was quite high. I do not know what to say because there were lots of upsets, my team I thought I had has been thrown completely off balance. I have to go back to the drawing board.

It’s amazing that out of the seven national champions in the female, six of them were beaten, only one retained her title, so we now have to organise another trials to determine who’ll win. Whoever wins, makes the team”

The Olympic gold medalist was however , a bit worried by the turn of events the Gov Egwu tourney presented as he confessed that the selection of the wrestlers was going to be a bit dicey for him.

He said, “I think, I’m just jittery because I did have some people in camp I can watch over again for a while to see what they can do and now , I have a set of new people and I don’t know what to expect. He added, “in Greco Roman with seven weight classes three were beaten in a couple of weight classes. “I will get a team in two weeks time, but that will not be my definitive team, my team will be ready after the training tour, even in the African wrestling Championship if I go with you and you don’t give me 100 percent of what you have , then you have made my job easier for me, because I have another person who can go.
