Women wrestlers target SEA Games gold

VietNamNet Bridge – 13:31' 09/07/2007 (GMT+7)

Can I play? Vietnamese wrestlers train in preparation for the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand this December.

The National Women's Wrestling Team are aiming to win three gold medals at the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand this December, according to the team's training board.

Vietnamese wrestlers will compete for nine sets of medals in nine events they said.

The women will compete in four of those categories in the 48kg, 55kg, 59kg and 72kg weight classes.

To reach the golden target, six of Vietnam's best - Dang Thi Van, Nguyen Thi Hai Yen, Nghiem Thi Giang, Luong Thi Quyen, Pham Thi Hue and Le Thi Trang - are doing everything they can to prepare for the Games.

Their first big training session starts next Thursday when they leave for a 15-day trip to Bulgaria.

Team coaches said Trang, - Giang and Yen are the best hopes for medals in the 48kg, 55kg, and 59kg categories, respectively.

But the Games won't be easy, especially since the team has lost key athletes to retirement.

Coaches said they hope Vietnam does well despite this and earns much needed points to win a spot in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"With their skills and fitness at present, we expect two Vietnamese women will compete in Olympics," said head coach Le Van Suc.

The 24th SEA Games, scheduled from November 29 to December 13, will be the largest in its history with 43 events and 488 sets of medals to be won. Vietnam will send 650 athletes to the Games, down from an earlier estimate of 800.

The athletes will compete in 36 out of 43 competitions and will likely win about 70 gold medals and post a top three finish, according to the Viet Nam Olympics Committee.

Two years ago, Vietnam came in third place with 71 golds at the 23rd SEA Games in the Philippines and scored even better with 158 golds as hosts in 2003.

Japan bagged three gold and two silver medals in the women's freestyle wrestling late Saturday night in the ongoing 2007 Asian Jr. Wrestling championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila, reported the official Philippine News Agency on Sunday.

Kajita Mizuka, Nishi Nodoka and Kuneida Mika ruled their respective weight class as the 42-member Japan contingent recovered from only two-bronze finish in the opening day Friday of the 15-nation event, said the report.

The Vietnamese women wrestlers also won two golds and two silvers while Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Chinese Taipei had one gold each.

Nguyen Thi Loc upset Sakai Noriko of Japan, 9-3, in the 44kg finals and Le Thi Trang overpowered Hsin Hua Chen of Chinese Taipei, 3-0, in the 51kg finals.

Host Philippines continued to falter in search for its first medal as Joan Lonosa and Noemi Tener lost their respective matches for bronze medal in the freestyle event of the three-day competition sponsored jointly by the Department of Tourism and private companies in Manila.

USOEC's Newcomers Compete

July 09, 2007
MARQUETTE –

Six new members of the U.S. Olympic Education Center’s women’s freestyle wrestling team competed July 6 at the Junior Canada Cup in Guelph, Ontario.
Five wrestlers finished fourth or better. Marquette Senior High School senior Beth Johnson (Garden City, Kan.) finished first at 56-kilograms with three straight wins against Canadian competitors.
“Beth hurt her hand during our team training camp [held at USOEC prior to the competition]. It was good to see that she can overcome an injury and still perform well,” said head coach Shannyn Gillespie.
Elizabeth DeAngelo (Mebane, N.C.), an MSHS senior, placed second at 52 kg. She won her first two matches, but fell to Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md.) in her final match.
MSHS seniors Melissa Apodaca (Anchorage, Alaska) and Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) came in fourth at 60 and 65 kg, respectively. Both wrestlers finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
At 70 kg, MSHS senior Katie Crouch (Florida) compiled a 1-2 record. Her win came over teammate and MSHS senior Lindsey Brooks (Klein, Texas), who finished with a 1-3 record. Crouch and Brooks placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
“Lindsey is a three-time state champion from Texas, one of the few states to sanction high school wrestling,” said Gillespie. “Katie stayed under the radar during high school, but showed a high caliber of competition against Lindsey. We are very impressed with their performance.”
