Anaka earns world wrestling bronze

Wrestler Stacie Anaka of Saanich can celebrate her first world medal, after taking bronze in the womens 63kg division at the Good Luck Beijing 2007 Junior World Wrestling Championships in China.
Anaka beat Tsedendorj of Mongolia with a late move in the third and final round. The Reynolds grad opened with a win over Miranda from Mexico, but lost to Melinikova of Russia in her second match. She gained new life when the Russian advanced to the gold medal match, and moved to the medal round with a win over Poshtaruk of Kazakhstan.

Rob Koll, Shannyn Gillespie to go On the Mat this week

This weeks edition of On the Mat will feature Rob Koll and Shannyn Gillespie.
Rob Koll is the current head wrestling coach at Cornell University, a position he has held for the past 13 years. During his tenure, Koll has led his teams to 10 Ivy titles, two EIWA titles and eight top-20 finishes at the NCAA tournament. In 2005, Koll was named NCAA Coach of the Year after placing fourth at the NCAA tournament.
As an athlete, Koll was a four-time All-American and an NCAA champion for North Carolina. While competing in freestyle Koll was a two-time National Open Champion, a World Cup Champion and a Pan American Games champion. He also placed fifth at the World Championships in 1990.
He is the son of Bill Koll, a former three-time undefeated NCAA champion for Iowa State Teachers College (now Northern Iowa).
Gillespie serves as the head womens wrestling coach at the United States Olympic Education Center located on the campus of Northern Michigan University. Since arriving at the U.S. Olympic Education Center in 2004, he has guided athletes such as Mary Kelly, Sharon Jacobson, Dany Hedin and Randi Miller to national championship titles.
Gillespie grew up in Evanston, Ill., and culminated his athletic career by training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from 1997-1999. While wrestling at Lock Haven, Gillespie earned All-American honors by placing 3rd place at the 1993 NCAA tournament. In 1989 he won an Illinois state title.
On the Mat is a weekly wrestling radio program that airs every Wednesday night. This weeks broadcast can be heard live from 6-7 p.m. Central Standard Time. The Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum in Waterloo, Iowa, hosts the show.

Six Regina students won medals at the Pan-Am cadet wrestling championships, which ran Aug. 15-20 in Panama City, Panama.
The Regina contingent included four gold medallists -- Daphne-Anne Hodgson of Miller (43-kilogram female division), Jasmine Slinn of Balfour (46kg female), Jackie Boudreau of Winston Knoll (65kg female) and Connor Malloy of LeBoldus (76kg male).

Wrestling: Pendleton's Katie Downing won a gold medal at the Warsaw Cup freestyle event. She beat Volha Khilko, Belarus, at 147 pounds.
