Kyoko Hamaguchi's hopes for winning her first wrestling championship in four years were dashed when she was beaten by defending champion Stanka Zlateva of Bulgaria on Sunday in the women's 72-kilogram weight class in the World Wrestling Championship.

She also failed to win a medal for the first time in six years, or to qualify for the next Olympics.

Despite her loss, Hamaguchi expressed her determination to improve her skills. "I found problems that I must overcome to become stronger. I just can't let myself be depressed," she told reporters after the match. (Mainichi)

Indians come a cropper

BAKU: India’s campaign at the World wrestling championship ended with just one Olympic quota berth for the next year’s Beijing Games, as the three women grapplers in contention on Sunday fell flat belying all expectations.

Much was expected from Geetika Jakhar, the Haryana woman who has been projected as a future medal prospect, but the 63kg wrestler lost tamely to Italy’s Maite Piva in the second round.

Geetika had a first round bye considering her ranking, but she failed to translate that on the mat and lost 0-2 to Piva.

In the 67kg category, Suman Kundu won her first round match against Michala Spoustova of the Czech Republic in a close decision. However in the next round, she lost to Belarus’ Hanna Beliaeyva 4-0.

The last competitor, Minakshi Devi (72kg), lost to Venezuela’s Jarasmit Weffe 0-3 in the first round.

Abbas Abbasov: I never wished Azerbaijan to have women wrestling

[ 24 Sep 2007 12:36  ]

Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation honoured president, ex first Deputy Prime Minister Abbas Abbasov was interviewed by APA-Sport

- Are you pleased with our wrestlers’ results in the world championship in Baku?
- First of all I should say that the world wrestling championship in Baku is an event of historical importance. It is not an east task to organize the event which occupies 800 representatives from 104 states. In my opinion our state managed successfully to carry out managerial procedure. Our wrestlers also showed not bead results, gaining one gold, one bronze medal and 5 Olympic licences. Ali Isayev was close to gain the licence for the Beijing too. Not everything is lost. There is a qualified international tournament and the European championhip. If our wrestlers make their best and train seriously it is possible to gain more medals for the Beijing Olympic Games.
- Do you think the national team could gain more licences?
- This is sport. Our wrestler is trained. They held their first matches against the Olympic champion which creates extra problems. In think those sportsmen who failed to gain licence should hope for the next Games. I do not see any problem with it.
- Do not you think that our wrestler showed better results in the reign of you?
- Sport always surprises with different results. The sportsman should have nerves beside good training and fortune. I consider that the wrestlers have every condition to show good results. Novruz Temrezov(84 kg) after losing his match came up to me and said he had temperature. I would not say our wrestlers were in bad form.
- Will its legionaries bring success to the national team?
- All world teams have legionaries. There are other reasons too. As any Moslem we think that woman should not wrestle. I personally think so. We have our traditions. We think that woman has special role and duties in family. If we do not wish it to our women let’s bring legionaries from abroad. On the other hand we had leading wrestler in light kg. Ibrahimpasha Dadashov, Yitzak Jafarov, Aydin Ibrahimov, Kamal Jamilov, Rafig Hajiyev, Namig Abdullayev, Farid Mansurov… We should fill other places with legionaries if we want our team to succeed. We should invite someone. One of them participated well. Another struggled not so well.
- What is reason that we lack local wrestler in heavy kg?
- They do not wish to wrestle. Besides we should tell thick people from actual wrestlers.
- The Wrestling Federation president Fazil Mammadov thinks the wrestling school of Azerbaijan should be re-established…
- There is no need for this. Azerbijan wrestling school has its root and base. The aforementioned wrestler came from this school. We had very prominent wrestlers. It is possible to improve their school. Wrestling has new rules now. Te rules which existed five years ago is quite different now. Fazil Mammadov meant this aspect ./APA-sport/

Colonie native Kristie Marano tied a U.S. record by earning her ninth medal with a second-place finish in the 158-pound division Sunday at the World Wrestling Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The 28-year-old two-time world champion earned her fifth career silver medal at the event with a 3-0, 3-0 loss to last year's world champion, Stanka Zlateva of Bulgaria.

After her bout, Marano, who has won a medal at all nine appearances at the World Championships, learned she has shared the same accolade with heavyweight freestyle legend Bruce Baumgartner.

"I didn't know that," Marano said of the record. "But he was pretty good, so it's definitely a good accomplishment. It's a an honor to accomplish something like that. It's not the medal I wanted. But it's still a medal, and that's good."

Mariano tried to take down Zlateva several times with a series of arm throws, but it was to no avail. Last month in Poland, Marano also lost to Zlateva.

"I just didn't wrestle very well," Marano said. "I don't know; I didn't wrestle very well a month ago and got pinned by her. I just didn't get anything going. There is definitely room for improvement, and I'm going to keep working hard for next year."
