ROGERS -- The 110-pound freshman girl who always wanted to put someone in a headlock and the 180-pound senior boy who wants to play sports -- but not football or basketball -- soon could have another option.

The Rogers School Board at a Thursday study session heard a proposal from Athletic Director Mark Holderbaum to add wrestling to the district's sports list.

"Wrestling tends to reach out to other kids who are not already involved, though there is some carryover from football," he said.

More than 120 students have signed petitions asking to participate in wrestling, Holderbaum said. Instructors also have expressed interest in the sport.

"I have had three folks that I spoke with that are on staff and have wrestling in their background, either as a coach or an athlete," Holderbaum said.

The district would pay $8,732 in startup costs to add wrestling , including $3,372 for equipment and supplies and $4,100 for a coach, Holderbaum said.

"The nice thing about this opportunity is the Arkansas Wrestling Association has a program as an incentive that will buy mats for the schools that implement wrestling," Holderbaum said.

Mats are $10,000 each and would be needed at Rogers High School this year and Rogers Heritage High School when it opens in August.

Students could start wrestling as soon as early November, Holderbaum said. The program would start as a club sport, with students providing their own transportation to and from practices and matches.

Once the Arkansas Activities Association sanctions wrestling as a sport, the district would provide transportation for wrestlers, he said.

Superintendent Janie Darr said she gets e-mail daily from patrons asking about wrestling.

"This would be after school, so it would not take any time out of the academic school day," Darr said.

School board member Cathy Allen asked where wrestlers would practice and have matches, as school gyms are tightly booked with volleyball and basketball.

Wrestlers could practice at the sophomore center auxiliary gym and have matches in the main gym, Holderbaum said.

Byron Black, another school board member, noted that the Rogers Activity Center has 50 to 60 youngsters who participate in wrestling.

Other area schools already offer wrestling as club sports. They include high schools in Bentonville, Fayetteville, Gentry, Springdale and Springdale Har-Ber, according to the Arkansas Wrestling Association.

The school board likely will discuss adding wrestling again at its regular October meeting.
