Mangalore, Oct 9, 2007:
The campus of Govinda Dasa College at
Suratkal near here turned into a virtual battlefield as more than 200 students
got into the ring to win the prestigious Mangalore University Inter-collegiate Wrestling
Championship 2007-08 and Dakshina Kannada district Pre-University
Inter-collegiate Wrestling Championship on Monday October 8 and Tuesday October
9. It was indeed a great time of fun and frolic for local students as wrestlers
fought tooth and nail for supremacy.
Wrestling has a history of more than three thousand years. One can find the
reference of wrestling in the epic of Gilgamesh in Sumerian literature. In the
Old Testament, we can find Jacob wrestling with Angel.
In ancient Greece, Greek wrestling was a popular form of martial art. But this
sport is not so popular in the coastal region of Karnataka. But the Mangalore
University has taken initiatives to popularize this sport in this region. For
the first time, the wrestling championship has been organized on a grand scale.
The college youth here have lot of potential
in wrestling which requires lot of stamina. But they lack basic techniques,
says Dr H Nagalingappa, director of physical education in Mangalore University.
In wrestling, the wrestler has to show his talent within 6 minutes. Hence, this
sport is not like other sports, he informs.
Govinda Das College has been selected for wrestling championship because, the
college has good wrestlers, he opines.
The competition was held in 8 different categories for men, from 50 KG to 120
KG. At the same time, the competition was held in 7 categories for women, from
48 KG to 72 KG.
In the degree men's section Govinda Dasa College bagged the first place while
Alva's College, Moodibidri stayed second. In the women's category of the
same group Alva's College, Moodbidri was the winner and SDM Ujire grabbed the
second spot.
In PUC boys' category Gokarnatheshwar College stayed on the top while host
Govinda Dasa College was the runners-up.
