Wrestling club competes in first meet

The newly formed Parker Unified School District "Junior Broncs" wrestling club competed in their first competition at the 19th annual Kiawani's Junior High wrestling tournament on Nov. 19.

The club is made up of students from Wallace and Le Pera students.

It was a large tournament, with over 270 wrestlers from 21 schools from 10 school districts competing. The young Junior Broncs team had 15 wrestlers in competition and came away with five medals.

Reni Gallan took first 68 pounds. Josh Saxon took second at 118 pounds. Javier Gomez took second at 133 pounds. Billy Escoto took third at 93 pounds and Ryan Shatto took third at 111 pounds.

Raymond Gomez was one match away from placing in the top four in a very tough 125 pound weight.

Also competing in the tournament for the club were Brandon Shatto, Andrew Cecchini, Justin Trimble, Brittny Pulu, Dallas Wells, Mason Cribbs, Mario DeLeon, Jesse Lucas, Cameron Booth and Derrick Yarborough. Many of these young wrestlers were in their first ever wrestling competition in a very tough tournament.

Every Junior Bronc wrestled hard, with good sportsmanship and did Parker Unified School district, and the community proud.

November rankings for U.S. Women's College wrestlers have been released

The U.S. Women’s College November Rankings have been released.

This year, a monthly individual ranking will be released during the women’s college season, running from October through March.

The ranking includes full-time undergraduate college students who compete on women’s college varsity teams, women’s college wrestling clubs or are members of their men’s college varsity programs. Also ranked are full-time undergraduate students who compete for with the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ.

The women’s college season has begun, with a number of tournaments already held, as well as some dual meet action.

Oklahoma City Univ. has the most No. 1 ranked athletes with four: Leann Barney at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Lacey Novinska at 72 kg/158.5 lbs., Carrie Clark at 82 kg/180.25 lbs. and Karon Scott at 95 kg/209 lbs.

The Univ. of the Cumberlands is next with three No. 1 ranked wrestlers: Melissa Gerard at 44 kg/ 97 lbs., Sandy Do at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Othella Lucas at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Missouri Valley College had a pair of No. 1 wrestlers, Emily Rinehart at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Amberlee Ebert at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. The other top-ranked athlete is Alyssa Lampe of the Northern Michigan Univ. USOEC at 48 kg/105.5 lbs.

Of the 10 top-ranked wrestlers in November, only three held the No. 1 positions in the preseason rankings: Gerard, Lampe and Rinehart.
