Pacific struggles in shifting gears from folkstyle back to freestyle as the
Boxers dropped matches to Oklahoma City, Simon Fraser and Menlo in the Bay
Area
ATHERTON, Calif. - In their first dual matches of the 2007-08 season, Pacific
found themselves on the short end of a trio of contests in a dual meet
tournament held at Menlo College's Haynes-Prim Pavilion.
Pacific
bookended their day with a 43-4 loss to Oklahoma City University and a 38-3 loss
to regional rival Simon Fraser. The sandwich match found the Boxers competitive
against Menlo, but Pacific could not overcome the weight of four forfeits in a
close 25-24 loss to the Oaks.
The Boxers, who have practiced more
folkstyle than freestyle in recent weeks thanks to their new affiliation with
the National Collegiate Wrestling Association's (NCWA) women's division,
struggled against a trio of teams that have specialized in the freestyle
discipline all season.
The Boxers failed to win a match against Oklahoma
City, who is in their first year of competition in women's wrestling. The Stars
picked up bonus points from three forfeits and three pins. Andrea Hale (Jr.,
Chicago, Ill) and Jade Anderson (Fr., Simi Valley, Calif.) were the only Boxers
to score points in their matches at 72 kilograms and 80 kilograms,
respectively. Valerie Prise (Sr., Diamond Bar, Calif.) and Summer Steenberg
(Fr., Kent, Wash.) also earned team points in their decision
losses.
Pacific made it quite a battle against the host Oaks, despite
giving up 20 points at the start of the match to forfeits. Prise opened the
affair with a first round pin at 58 kilograms, one of three from the Boxers in
the match. Jazzy Green (Fr., Santa Monica, Calif.) scored a two-round decision
over Shareese Mulholand at 55 kilograms, while Steenberg and Samantha Stych
(Fr., Oxnard, Calif.) added first round pins at 59 kilograms and 673 kilograms,
respectively.
Ashlee Evans had the only win for the Oaks in a contested
match, needing 1 minute, 45 seconds to pin Hale in the 67-kilogram match to
secure the victory.
The Boxers scored just three team points against
Simon Fraser, thanks to three losses by decision. The Clan rolled by accepting
a pair of forfeits and a pair of pins from Miranda Dick at 63 kilograms and
Raissa Pickinson at 67 kilograms.
Anderson came the closest to winning a
match for Pacific against the Clan, taking the first round of her 80-kilogram
match with Erin Church, 6-0. Church rolled right back with two shutout rounds
of her own to take the match by scores of 0-6, 6-0, 6-0.
The Boxers will
take a month off from competition over finals and the Christmas break. They
will return to action on Jan. 6, returning to the Bay Area to dual against Menlo
and San Jose State.
