Cody McGee (on top) defeated Paige Nemec of Crestwood 8-1 in the Division II
sectional semifinals. McGee went on to win the 103-pound title. |
Cody McGee and Colton Shaw won sectional titles and a brave Stephen Becker
placed second at West Branch last Saturday evening.
The Minerva threesome will compete in the Division II Districts at Akron
Firestone this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22-23.
McGee improved to 30-4 as he claimed the 103-pound title.
The junior reached the finals with an 8-1 win over Paige Nemec of
Crestwood.
Wrestling for first, McGee defeated Tanner Thompson of Hubbard 14-10.
Shaw (38-3) opened with a 10-1 decision over Dan Henson of Alliance and a 4-2
win over Cody Ryba of Crestwood.
In the finals, the junior major-decisioned Tyler Rubesich of Howland
17-7.
Becker has been sidelined the past three weeks with a severely sprained
knee.
The senior (29-4) pinned Brandon McKendrick of Ravenna Southeast in 45
seconds in his first match.
In the semifinals, Becker gutted out a 3-1 decision of Adam Horovitz of
Crestwood.
During the match, Becker re-injured his knee and was noticeably limping in
the third period.
With a trip to districts already secured, Head Coach Jeff Kullman consulted
with Becker and the duo decided the best course of action was to default the
championship match and not risk any further injury to the knee.
"I was pretty happy with the three championship finalists in McGee, Becker
and Shaw," stated Coach Kullman. "They all came here with their eyes on the
target of winning it and it showed. You can tell this, because when they were
all in tight spots, they did what they had to do to come out on top. For the
most part, that's how you know when wrestlers are focused and determined.
"We decided to rest Becker, because of an injury that we did not want to risk
getting worse. This was his fourth time in the sectional finals and he already
had claimed three individual sectional titles. But it was not worth what next
week means. It is more important to be as healthy as he can be and go from
there."
The only other placer was Tyler King as he finished sixth at 119 pounds.
"We had some disappointments as well," commented Coach Kullman. "Though they
had pretty tough weight classes, I really felt that Micah Kullman (140) and Zack
Lutes (135) were very capable of making it to districts.
"They are both hard workers in practice and there is no doubt their best days
are still ahead. But for now, I'm left with an empty feeling inside, especially
when one of them is your son and you know what he has put into it, because you
feel that their seasons should be continuing."
At districts, McGee's first opponent will be sophomore Brandon Oberholtzer of
Ravenna (19-12). The winner will face either freshman Anthony Tarulli (18-14) of
Orange or freshman Josh Beddow (17-5) of Norton.
Shaw will battle junior Brett Santoferraro (30-10) of Archbishop Hoban. A win
would pit him against either junior Kody Severino (38-8) of Edgewood or senior
Zach Jakubek (17-13) of Walsh Jesuit.
Becker's opening match will be against junior Rich Knotek (32-13) of Walsh
Jesuit. The winner will battle either junior Tom Shaw (15-11) of Perry or senior
Mike McMorrow (30-7) of Orrville.
The Firestone districts will begin at 5 p.m. this Friday, Feb. 22. The top
four in each weight class will qualify to the state championships, which will
take place in Columbus on Feb. 28-29 and March 1.

Goodrich's C.C. Weber and Newberry's Sammy Jenerou are two girls who came to
the Palace on Thursday to do more than just have fun.
Both qualified for the state wrestling finals in the 103-pound weight class;
Weber in Division 3 and Jenerou in Division 4.
"I only got a chance to wrestle half the season because I moved from
Manistique to Newberry," Jenerou said. "I just needed to get away. I guess I had
a pretty good season, considering I made it here in just half a season. This is
the first time the UP (Upper Peninsula) has competed down here, so this is very
exciting."
Jenerou said she hoped to wrestle for the Marine Corps.
Both lost their matches; Jenerou was pinned by Collin Zeerip of Hesperia, and
Weber lost, 7-6, to Steven Ruppert of Reed City.
C.C. is the sister of Mark Weber, who is trying to win his fourth state
title.
As far as her treatment from the guys, Weber said: "I still get comments at
times."
KEEP IT IN THE PARK: In 2007, Marcel Dubose won the 215-pound division
in Division 3 for Highland Park. This year he is competing for Oak Park, a
Division 1 school and entered the finals undefeated (33-0) and beat Nick Scalici
of Utica Ford in his first match Thursday.
INJURY: Brandon Boone, a senior from Montrose wrestling at 171 pounds,
was pinned by defending Division 3 champion Kamron Jackson of South Haven, and
had to be taken off the mat on a stretcher due to a neck injury.

Jenerou duo
advances 2/18/08

MUNISING — Two members of the Jenerou family extended their wrestling seasons by
placing in Saturday’s Division 4 individual district.
Former Manistique
wrestler Sammy Jenerou placed second at 103 pounds and Emerald sophomore Mike
Jenerou took fourth at 140.
Those achievements enable the brother/sister
combo to advance to Saturday’s individual regionals at Rogers City.
Sammy
Jenerou, now a senior at Newberry High School, was pinned by Iron Mountain
freshman Cameron Jones one minute, 47 seconds into the championship
bout.
“I hadn’t wrestled him (Jones) yet this year,” said Sammy, who
transferred to Newberry last fall through school of choice. “I didn’t know what
to expect. This kind of felt like the U.P. Finals. I think the (individual)
regionals will be exciting. Even though we have a small team in numbers, we have
some good wrestlers. It feels great to be going down to Rogers
City.”
Sammy reached the title match by outlasting St. Ignace’s Shawn
Horn 13-11 in the semifinals.
“This season was a lot shorter,” said
Sammy, who regained her eligibility in January. “I knew most of the guys on the
team from before, but it was still a big adjustment. I miss Manistique. I feel
bad for them because they don’t have a 103-pounder.”
Mike Jenerou’s name
will go down in history as the first Manistique wrestler to compete beyond
districts.
“This is a big accomplishment,” said Mike. “It’s kind of cool
to be the first one from our school to wrestle in a regional. Only, I wish a
couple of our other guys could have also moved on. It’s kind of different having
my sister on a different team. I wish she was on our team. Yet, we’ve been
rooting for each other all season and will continue to do that in Rogers
City.”
Mike Jenerou fell to Gwinn junior Corey Peterson 8-6 on a near
fall in the closing seconds of their third-place match. Mike built a 4-0
advantage early in the second period. Peterman then got his first near fall
early in the third before the two grapplers exchanged reversals, setting the
stage for a nailbiting finish.
“I could have wrestled better,” said Mike.
“But then we got into the second period and my energy seemed to
disappear.”
The Emeralds lost Tim Marks (160) to a dislocated elbow
during the tourney.
“That was unfortunate for Tim,” said Emeralds’ coach
Everett Wood. “Mike wrestled well all day. Alex Rubick (171) was our team leader
all year, but didn’t have his best day. I know this is disappointing for him.
But in all fairness to Alex, he was in a very tough weight class. We’re a little
disappointed. We thought we had a chance to qualify three.”
Wood says
he’s happy Upper Peninsula wrestlers finally get to compete in the statewide
individual tournament.
“If your team doesn’t win a district title, this
offers you a second chance to move on,” he added. “Last year, after the U.P.
Finals it was over. This year, you’re wrestling for something. There were a lot
of good, though matches here today.”

High School Varsity Wrestlers Kristi Garr, sophomore, and C.C. Weber, junior,
claimed their television fame last month when sports network ESPN chose to
feature both girls on "Outside the Lines, an Emmy-winning series that examines
sports issues off the playing field. The segment is scheduled to air March
9.
Ortonville resident Kent Bailo, founder and director of the United
States' Girls Wrestling Association, said ESPN contacted him regarding girls
wrestling and its growth in area schools throughout the United States.
"I
told producer Andy Lockett about Weber and Garr in Goodrich," said Bailo, a
former Brandon High School coach. "The ESPN crew came to my house here in
Ortonville and completed the hour-long interview. The story is regarding girls
wrestling on boys teams."
The national exposure on the popular sports
network didn't seem to phase Garr or Weber.
Normally, there are a lot of distractions when you're wrestling," said Garr.
"ESPN filming me was just another distraction. Once you get your head into the
game you don't even notice what's going on around you."
Garr has a record
of 22-18 this season and starts at 113 pounds. She has been wrestling with her
team since the fifth grade and became interested in wrestling while watching her
brothers compete at tournaments.
"I would beg my parents to let me
wrestle when I was younger," said Garr. "Because C.C. was on the team and a
girl, I knew I could do it."
Starting at 103 pounds, Weber holds a 51-13
record, which is the most single-season wins in the area by a girl. Weber became
interested in wrestling also by watching her older brothers wrestle at
tournaments.
Weber, the first area girl to qualify for the individual
state tournament twice, said it's no big deal to just get there.
"I don't
view it like that. I haven't accomplished anything until I take a place at
states."
"People need to get over the fact that I am a girl. If they did,
it wouldn't be such a big deal that I made it to states."

Seven members of Coppell's wrestling team
placed Saturday at the State Tournament in Austin.
The Cowgirls finished
second in the State to Amarillo Caprock — five time defending state champion —
while the Cowboys finished seventh.
It is the third consecutive season
both the Cowboys and Cowgirls have finished in the top 10, something only one
other school has accomplished during the past three years.
“I couldn’t be
happier with the team,” said coach Chip Lowery. “We lost a couple of matches in
the finals that I would have loved to see us win, but I’m very
pleased.”
Tessa Plana, wrestling at 138 pounds, won first place, winning
all four of her matches by pin. Plana pinned Amarillo Caprock’s Daffney Barbosa
at 6:56 in overtime of the finals. It is her second state title. “Tessa beat an
opponent that she had already beaten, and she needed overtime,” Lowery said.
“But, that’s what champions do, they find a way to win.”
Three other
Cowgirl wrestlers placed, each losing to the eventual champion in their
respective weight classes.
Yadinma Nwaiwu (215) placed second. Nawaiwu
pinned Amarillo Caprock's Britnee Barbose in 50 seconds in the first round. She
would win two more matches before losing to Arlington's Amanda Athon by pin in
the finals.
Lauren Masolak (148) finished sixth. She lost to eventual
champion Breena Maul of Amarillo Tascosa in the quarterfinals.
Brittany
Jones (165) finished fifth. Jones won her first two matches by pin before losing
to champion Alana Jimenez of Katy in the semifinals.
The Cowboys were led
by Dillon Horne (135) and Ben Robinson (171), who each finished
second.
Horne lost to Deandra Carter of Euless Trinity, 11-5, in the
finals while Robinson lost by pin against Houston Westside's James
Hazzard.
Lowery said both Horne and Robinson defeated opponents in the
semifinals that had only lost once entering the match.
Trevor Ward (189)
finished fifth and also lost to an eventual champion, Robert Prigmore of
Southlake Carroll.
“Trevor had to miss a month of practice during the
season, and wasn’t able to warm up before district and regionals,” Lowery said.
“I knew he had it in him, but to be a state placer as a sophomore during a tough
season was a real pleasant surprise.”
Coppell's Austin Soders (125) also
competed, winning his first match before dropping his next two.
“I
thought we did a great job of finishing with the balance of both teams that we
have been talking about all season,” Lowery said. “We never talked about
placing, just being competitive in both guys and girls, and the kids worked hard
at achieving that all season.

Abbreviated by a snow/ice day on Monday and the start of the
March break on Friday, the week that was nonetheless brought more than its fair
share of highlights for local high school athletes.
HIGH SCHOOL NOTES
It was somewhat of a gold rush in SDSSAA circles last week, what with
Chelmsford's Dylan Byrnes, Sheldon Spencer and Spencer Burton all earning
first-place finishes at provincial wrestling last week.
Add to that Lee-Anna Taillefer's (Macdonald Cartier) silver medal at girls'
provincial wrestling and Gillian Scott's (Lasalle) bronze in level II slalom at
Alpine Skiing, thought to be Sudbury's first medal earned at provincial alpine,
and you have some solid reasons why some SDSSAA coaches will go into the March
break with smiles on their faces.

A good start can make all the difference at the state high school wrestling
championships.
Obviously, to win a title, a wrestler must win all four matches over the
two-day event. But getting into a rhythm in the opening round can set the tone
for the remainder of the tournament.
“Every match is important, but you can’t get look past your first match or
your first opponent,” said Ballston Spa senior Alex Steciuk, one of 14 wrestlers
on Section II’s Division I team with previous experience at the states, which
begin Saturday morning at the Blue Cross Arena in Rochester. “You want to get
rolling, get into a rhythm where you feel good and get some confidence.”
Schuylerville’s Sarah Anderson (103) and Dan Ladd (275); Kirk Harrington of
Hudson Falls (119) and Aaron Barber (152) of Hudson Falls; Robert Merchant (145)
of Cobleskill-Richmondville; Cody Legg (152) of Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk; and
Warrensburg’s Logan Rock (215).
Barber took fourth last winter, and Harrington was sixth.
Anderson will be the only female competing at the event. Section VI 96
champion Carlee Sluberski, a junior at Fredonia High, withdrew to compete in a
freestyle event in Sweden that serves as a prep for the Junior World team.
Two-time Section II champ Amy Whitbeck of Duanesburg is the only other female
to qualify for states. She placed third in the Section II championships last
month.

AUBURN HILLS -- Three referees from West Michigan are officiating at the
state finals this weekend. Steve Shutich of Kentwood, Tom Kruithoff of Holland,
and Tom Hoffman of Middleville combine 46 years of experience working the
finals, and are well-respected on the West Michigan wrestling scene.
"This is even better than the first time," said Shutich, who is working his
10th state finals. "The overall quality of the wrestling and just the attitude
of the kids in general is what keeps me coming back every year."
Kruithoff, a veteran of 15 finals, is happy to be back for another year. .......

Pirozkhov defeated 2006 World bronze medalist Helena Allandi, 4-1,
0-4, 3-1.
“Elena competed at her new weight class,” said USA Wrestling
Women’s Developmental Coach Izzy Izboinikov. “She overall wrestled well. She
found a good takedown to win the match in the third period.”
Shaw stopped
Sanne Hernodh, 2-0, 1-0 in their bout.
“Stefanie wrestled her basics well
and made no mistakes,” said Izboinikov. “She used her opportunities on
defense.”
In addition to the Senior-level dual meet, a group of U.S.
Cadet wrestlers also had matches against Swedish opponents.
Winning her
match on the Cadet level was Carlene Sluberski of New York, a 2007 FILA Cadet

Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids)
claimed a gold medal at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. during the first day of the Alexander
Medved International on Friday.
Miranda won four matches on the way to
her title, including a 2-1, 1-0 win over three-time World medalist Carol Huyhn
of Canada in the championship finals.
Miranda opened the tournament with
second period wins over Katsiaryna Vasileuskaya of Belarus and Natalia Gushchina
of Russia. In the semifinals, she defeated Eleonora Abutalipova of Kazakhstan,
6-0, 5-0. The point which Huyhn scored in the finals match was the only point
which Miranda allowed during the tournament.
Miranda has won her second
international tournament in two weeks, after returning from an injury suffered
last summer. Miranda won a gold medal at the Pan American Championships at 51
kg/112.25 lbs. last weekend. This is also the first time that Miranda has been
down to the 48 kg/105.5 lbs. weight class since she won her Olympic bronze medal
in Athens, Greece in 2004.
“Patricia relinquished just one point in the
tournament,” said U.S. coach Levi Weikel-Magden. “Each of her opponents have
thrown something different at her, and she has adjusted well. She faced the
Canadian Olympian in the finals. We treated this finals match as a preliminary
bout in Beijing."
One other U.S. women’s wrestler competed on Friday at
48 kg, Amantha Hordagoda, (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), who dropped her
first match.
"Amantha wrestled better today. She wrestled the same
Belarussian that she wrestled in the dual (two days ago). She made some
improvements and continues to learn from each match,” said
Weikel-Magden.
The U.S. had two men competing at 55 kg/121 lbs., both who
dropped early matches. Vic Moreno (Stanford, Calif./Gator WC) was defeated in
his second match, while Danny Felix (Morgantown, W.Va./Sunkist Kids) fell in his
