He said Grade 9 students Sheldon and Kelsey had very strong showings, gaining valuable experience. Sheldon won three and lost two matches in his 38-kg. boys category while Kelsey was two and two in her 67.5-kg. girls category.

Blake also mentioned Adrianna was dominant against many of her opponents in the unlimited weight class girls category to win the bronze medal for the second straight year.

Athletics Headlines: MBU to Add Women's Wrestling Program for 2008-2009

MBU to Add Women's Wrestling Program for 2008-2009

Missouri Baptist University Director of Athletics Thomas Smith has announced that MBU will become one of only a handful of universities in the country to sponsor a women’s wrestling program, beginning in the 2008-2009 school year.

Women’s Wrestling is one of the fastest growing sports in both the United States and the world. It was added to the Olympic Games in 2004 and has been fully included in all programs of USA Wrestling, the sport’s national authority. At the high school level, women’s wrestling has increased at a rate of 10 percent a year. Currently, it is estimated that there are more than 6,000 women wrestlers. The number of colleges, however, offering women’s wrestling is minimal with few active programs in the United States.

“With the numerous state sponsored high school championships across the country, and our desire to provide more opportunities for female athletes, we are excited to be the second university in Missouri to offer this opportunity,” said Smith.

The women’s program will be headed by current MBU Men’s Wrestling Coach Brian Jackson. Jackson will pull double duty, coaching both the men’s and women’s programs. Jackson has already signed the first member of the MBU women’s wrestling team. Tasha McCuller, a senior at St. Louis Career Academy, becomes the first Lady Spartan wrestler in school history. McCuller’s brother Pablo Ramos is a sophomore on the MBU men’s wrestling team.

“The goal for the MBU Women’s Wrestling program will not only be to develop servant leaders and successful student athletes, but also to develop future Olympic athletes,” said Coach Brian Jackson. “This provides an incredible opportunity for athletes to compete at a higher level on the mat while working toward completing their degree.”

The Missouri Baptist University Department of Athletics competes as a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Since the NAIA does not currently sponsor women’s wrestling, the MBU women’s wrestling team will compete as a member of the Women’s College Wrestling Association. The WCWA was formed just this past weekend at the Women’s College Freestyle Wrestling National Championships in Oklahoma City.

About Coach Jackson: Jackson has attained Bronze certification with USA wrestling as a coach for both Olympic Styles of wrestling. He is considered one of the leaders in the state of Missouri in freestyle wrestling, and represents Missouri at both the National Duals and the Junior Nationals as a coach.

MARQUETTE — Sadie Kaneda, a freestyle wrestler at the United States Olympic Education Center, qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials with her gold-medal performance at the Women’s College Wrestling Association Freestyle National Championships in Oklahoma City, Okla.

The USOEC team also captured four silver medals.

Kaneda (Honolulu, Hawaii) was crowned college champion at 48 kilograms. The Northern Michigan University junior was able to defeat the 2006 Jr. World Champion, Nicole Woody, of Oklahoma City University, 1-0, 6-0. She will compete in the U.S. Olympic Trials June 13-15 in Las Vegas.

NMU sophomore Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis.) fell short to Jessica Medina from the University of the Cumberlands at 51 kg, 0-1, 7-2, 1-0.

According to USOEC coach Shannyn Gillespie, Lampe decided minutes before weighing in to wrestle up one weight class to allow her teammate Kaneda the opportunity to qualify for the Olympic Trials.

Senior Amy Borgnini (Terre Haute, Ind.) at 55 kg finished second to Sandy Do of Cumberlands, 2-1, 2-1. Nikki Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.) a sophomore, brought home silver after battling Kelsey Campbell of Arizona State University at 59 kg, 3-0, 1-0.

Freshman Lindsey Brooks (Spring, Texas) surpassed her fourth seed and made the gold medal round, securing a second-place finish. Brooks beat No. 1 seed Lacey Novinska from Missouri Valley College in the semifinals. Former USOEC resident athlete Melissa Simmons beat Brooks in a three period thriller 1-1, 1-1, 1-0 at 72 kg.

NMU freshman Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis.) debuted at her first WCWA and “looked impressive,” said Gillespie.

Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va.) at 63 kg and Erin Clodgo (Richmond, Vt.) at 67 kg were ineligible for the WCWA because they attend Marquette Senior High School, but they were able to receive victories over the reigning or current WCWA 2008 champions in their respective weight classes.

Avalon Doyle of Eastern Passage, Ben Eaglestone of Lake Echo, Ashley Riddell of Yarmouth, C.J. Thoms of Lake Charlotte and Morgan Marchand of Fall River are also competing.

The junior and senior nationals are held at the same time.

The six Nova Scotians aren’t expected to be medal contenders at the senior level, but the team should make a strong push in the junior ranks. The junior competition goes first, followed by the senior, which is open to junior wrestlers.

Doyle and Eaglestone are gold-medal threats among the juniors.

Doyle spent time over the Christmas break at the Olympic training facility in Colorado.

In Guelph, she’ll likely compete at 55 kg, though it’s possible she could go in at 59 kg.

Ontario’s Diana Ford is expected to give Doyle a good match should the two meet along the way.
