WAIKIKI
(KHNL) -- The sudden shutdown may ruin the season of a middle school girl's
wrestling team from California.
The girls are
staying at a hotel in Waikiki. They compete Saturday at a wrestling tournament
hosted by Moanalua High School. They're supposed to leave Sunday but so far
they have no easy way out.
They came to
Hawaii to compete but the Springtowne Lady Wildcat team is now wrestling with
the thought that they may not be able to come home in time to try and snatch
the California State Championship title for a third straight year.
"I'm
really disappointed that a lot of us put a lot of effort into this and just to
have it thrown away or taken away from us really hurts," said wrestler
Kresta Tabaranza.
"It's
hard because we've been talking about, oh this is the team we're going to win,
we got this," said Desiree Espana, an another wrestler.
ATA's sudden
shut down threatens to break their winning streak. The middle school girl's
wrestling team is on Oahu for a tournament -- a trip they worked hard for,
raising money the past nine months for travel expenses.
"The
financial sacrifice that families made to get their kids here, it was not easy
and the hard work these kids put in just to get here to compete it's
frustrating," said coach Jason Guiducci.
The team is
stressed out knowing their families may have to fork out even more money at the
last minute to pay for their return flight.
The Lady
Wildcats are scheduled to defend their title in a week, but with no way back
the girls may miss their chance to capture another victory as state champions.

You would hardly know it to look at her, but underneath the casual clothes and cheery personality, Sara Kuiper makes it big in the athletic crowd. From Wrestling to Swim Team, Sara has covered school sports big and small.
It started with her passion for outdoor soccer. The thrills of team sports that are both physical and fast are the kind that Sara excels in. This week Sara is currently preparing for the Summer outdoor soccer team and the Track team.
A brief history of her athletic career includes Wrestling, Soccer (both indoor and out), the Swim Team, Track and Cross Country. Wrestling took Sara to Zone, where she received a 3rd place position. Sara was on two volleyball teams this year, one that took Sara and her team to a 2nd place in the Zone tournament, and the other that took her south to Cuba.
Tennis may be her biggest achievement so far. Sara played on the junior women's singles team that took her to the Zone tournament. There she received an impressive 1st place position. "It felt very good to take home a 1st position; it always does for any sport. I was very happy with my achievement," said Sara. This in turn led her to the SOSSA competition where she brought home a 4th place position.
In the future, Sara plans to return to her summer sports that include Swim Team and outdoor soccer. Her continuous effort to excel in whichever sport, makes Sara very deserving of the title Athlete of the Week indeed.
