U.S. women's freestyle wrestlers fare well at 2001 Manitoba Open

The U.S. won three of the six weight classes at the 2001 Manitoba Open Women’s freestyle competition, Feb. 3.

Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids), Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) and Satrinina Vernon (Rodeo, Calif./Missouri Valley) all won their weight classes.

McMan won at 136.5 pounds. She decisioned Trish Leibel (NWO), 7-1. This is her second win in one week. McMann also won the Missouri Valley International Open last week. She is currently ranked No. 1 at her weight classes in the U.S.

Montgomery decisioned Katie Downing (Pendleton, Ind./UM-Morris), 8-5. Montgomery is currently ranked No. 2 in the U.S. while Downing is ranked No. 5.

Vernon won at 165.25 pounds. Like McMann, this is her second win in one week. She also won the Missouri Valley International Open last week. Vernon is currently ranked No. 1 in the U.S.

Frontier has first female champion
FRONTIER LEAGUE: Felix pins down 103-pound crown to help Calabasas win title.

Calabasas' Laura Felix made Frontier League history.

Felix became the first female to capture a league wrestling title Saturday.

Felix won the 103-pound crown by pinning her opponent in the final.

Calabasas claimed the team title with 174 points. Alemany was runner-up with 129. Chaminade placed third.
