Simon Fraser to add 4 sports to CIAU lineup
(Dec 7,2000) SFU Athletics To Make Application To Canada West to join in Men's Football, Women's Volleyball and Men's and Women's Wrestling
Simon Fraser University will apply to the Canada West Universities Athletic Association, a member of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU), for playing privileges in September 2002 in the varsity sports of men's football, women's volleyball, and men's and women's wrestling.
The decision was made by the SFU Vice-Presidents and Deans' Committee on Tuesday, after receiving a report from a five-member committee established to review on a sport-by-sport basis the most appropriate competitive home for SFU's teams to ensure their long term stability.
SFU's men's and women's swimming and diving, track and field, and soccer, as well as men's golf and women's softball will continue to compete in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The men's and women's basketball teams began playing in Canada West earlier this fall.
The status of the SFU women's field hockey program, which currently plays in the Vancouver Women's Field Hockey League, continues to be under review as the full cost implications of these adjustments are finalized. Field hockey is played in Canada West, but not in the NAIA.
"SFU's commitment to excellence in university athletics and to financial assistance for gifted student-athletes continues as strong as ever," said Wilf Wedmann, SFU's new Director of Recreational Services & Athletics.
"Much has changed in both the NAIA and the CIAU since SFU began competing in the mid-1960s," said Wedmann, who competed for the Clan in the 1960s. "The CIAU's competitive excellence has grown greatly and it now has a very strong national championship program. The NAIA, meanwhile has undergone significant changes as its larger schools have left to compete in the NCAA.
This has resulted in considerable scheduling difficulties and instability for some of our SFU teams who traditionally competed against those larger schools in Washington and Oregon."
As a result of these scheduling difficulties, SFU applied earlier this year to play basketball in Canada West, and undertook a sport-by-sport review for its remaining sports.
"I realize that many of our Clan alumni, myself included, and our current student-athletes have a close emotional bond to the NAIA, but as our competitive environment changes we must make adjustments to ensure we are able to achieve our goals," said Wedmann. "It's just like during a game in which one may wish to play a certain way, but the opposition and the game conditions demand that one is able to adapt one's approach if one is to win."
The five member Sports Review Committee consisted of: Mike Dinning (former SFU Athletics Director and currently the SFU Director of Campus Community Services), Wilf Wedmann (the current Athletics Director), Diane St-Denis (the Assistant to the Athletics Director), Gordon Stewart (Director of Alumni Relations), and Tom Halford (SFU student- athlete and former chair of the SFU Student-Athletes Council).
