And the winner is ...
Wrestler Kyle Sweezey is male Athlete of the Year; teammate Tonya Verbeek shares the womens honours with hockeys Sarah Brooks
By Chris Chan
Sports Editor , The Brock Press (Canada)
Wrestlers Kyle Sweezey and Tonya Verbeek, and womens hockey player Sarah Brooks were the big winners last night at the 34th Annual Brock Athletics Awards Dinner.
Sweezey won Male Athlete of the Year for his outstanding performance in leading the Badgers to their third straight Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union (CIAU) crown.
The third year Physical Education Major won gold four times, and won his second straight Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship. Sweezey was dominant all season long, posting a 38-4 record. Along with five first-place finishes, Sweezey won silver at the McMaster Open and a bronze medal at the Simon Fraser Clansman International and New York International.
The Sault Ste. Marie native edged out mens basketball player Ryan Dudley and swimmer Ian Young, both finalists in the voting for athlete of the year.
On the womens side, Verbeek and Brooks were co-winners for Female Athlete of the Year. For Verbeek, this is the second straight year she has won this award. Verbeek won seven tournaments, including the OUA and CIAU titles. Not only was the Beamsville native unbeatable, her leadership and sportsmanship also won her the CIAU Bob Pugh Fair Play Award. At the World International Tournament held in France early this year, she showed why she may be one of the worlds best at 57kg, winning gold and going 5-0.

Mens wrestling team wins third CIAU championship; women finish second
By Chris Chan
The Brock Press
As for the womens team, their performance was just as impressive, only to come up short to the Calgary Dinosaurs. This is the second straight year the women have finished second to Calgary. The women finished with five medals, winning two gold and three bronze.
The Badgers were led by Tonya Verbeek. Verbeek won the Bob Pugh Fairplay Athlete Award, and won all three of her round robin matches en route to a second straight title in her 57kg weight class. She defeated Calgarys Melissa Kindratsky 10-0 in the championship match.
Third year wrestler Laura Jones also won gold, defeating Tamara Medwidsky of Concordia by pin. It was sweet revenge for Jones, who earlier in the year lost to Medwidsky at the McMaster Open.
Rookie Megan Dolan lost her opening match to the eventual winner in her weight class, but came back strong in the end to win the bronze medal defeating Marcia Chaisson of UNB by pinfall at 61kg.
Also winning bronze were rookies Heather Sweezey and Mary Kleinendorst.
Sweezey dropped a close 9-8 decision to three-time CIAU champion Belinda Chou of Western at 53kg but came back strong with a bronze medal victory over Albertas Tasha Little.
At 77kg, Kleinendorst defeated Linda Bishop of Alberta to finish third.
Overall, a very impressive showing by the women, who with their performance, earned Richard Deschatelets and Marty Calder the CIAU Female Coaches of the Year award.
Last month, both Deschatelets and Calder were named OUA wrestling coaches of the year for the second year in a row.
The awards is a tribute to two excellent coaches who have made Brock into a wrestling dynasty. But despite the recognition, Deschatelets insists it is his wrestlers that should be recognized, not him.
This weekend we had an outstanding performance by both our mens and womens teams and showed everyone why both our teams are at the top of the CIAU, said Deschatelets.
