Joe Corso and Dominique Smalley to give clinic prior to Ames Women's Freestyle Tournament in Iowa, May 19

Joe Corso of West Des Moines, Iowa and Dominique Smalley of Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri will conduct a technique clinic prior to the Ames Women's Freestyle tournament.
Smalley, a graduate of City High of Iowa City has made her mark on the womens wrestling scene placing 4th and 2nd in the last two US Nationals. She has won titles in the University Nationals, FILA Junior Nationals, and Cadet Nationals.
Her International competitiveness has earned high placing in Sweden's Klippan Lady's Open, Poland International Open, Missouri Valley International, Canadas Bison International Open, the Sunkist Open and the Dave Schultz Memorial Open.
She wrestles for the Missouri Valley College team and has the number 2 USA ranking at 75 kg. Smalley appears at this event as part of USA Wrestling's Athlete Appearance Program.
Corso has made an impact in the wrestling world after a highly successful wrestling career. A member of the 1976 US Olympic Freestyle Team, 3rd in the 1979 World Championships, 1979 Pan American Championships champion and a gold medal at the 1992 Veterans World Champions are just a few of his accomplishments.
Corso has been very influential in women's wrestling, serving as coach for the 2001 USA World Team and has coached several mens teams in international competition and as a coach for the Sunkist Kids has won several team titles.
The Ames Women's Freestyle Tournament is open to schoolgirls (born in 1987-88), cadets (1985-86) and juniors (high school 9-12 grade). The entry fee is $8 and competitors must have a current USA Wrestling membership. Cards will be available at the tournament. Weigh ins are from 7:30 to 9 a.m. The clinic will begin at 9 a.m.

Five U.S. women unbeaten after first day at 2001 Pan American Championships

Five of the six U.S. women wrestlers are undefeated after the first day of competition at the 2001 Pan American Womens Wrestling Championships, in Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, May 17-20.
Held three of every four years during the non-Pan American Games years, the Pan American Championships features the best wrestlers in North, Central and South America.
Among the unbeaten Americans is 2000 World champion Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) at 149.75 pounds.Marano pinned Sumergida Tejada of the Dominican Republic in the first match, then defeated veteran Xiomera Guevara of Venezuela, 7-1 in the second match.
Four 2001 U.S. Nationals champions also went unbeaten during the first day for the United States: Stephanie Murata (Lansing, Mich./Sunkist Kids) at 112.25 pounds, Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 123.25 pounds, Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) at 136.5 pounds and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 165.25 pounds.
Murata scored a pin over Ivelisse Nunez of the Dominican Republic in the first round, then stopped Magdelena Arellano of Mexico, 11-3 in the second match.
George dominated her opponents, winning by technical fall over Vesmeica Santos of Dominican Republic, 11-1 and pinning Angela Peraza of Venezuela in just 22 seconds.
McMann had just one match during the day, pinning Lil Azucena of El Salvador.
Smith defeated Yamilezt Ramos of Venezuela, 9-1, to open the tournament, then pinned Arelis Taveras of the Dominican Republic in 40 seconds in the next round.
2000 U.S. World Team member Clarissa Chun (Kapolei, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) had a 1-1 record at 101.25 pounds. Chun opened with an 11-1 technical fall over Ingrid Cuellar of El Salvador, then dropped a 10-4 decision to Mayerly Caripa of Venezuela.
The competition will be completed on Friday, May 18. The United States is the defending Pan American Championships team champion in womens wrestling. Smith was one of three U.S. champions at the 2000 Pan American Championships, which were held in Cali, Colombia.

ESPN2 announces airdates for U.S. National Championships; Freestyle World Cup

Fans urged to watch both shows
U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO AIR ON ESPN2, MAY 25 AT 1:00 P.M. EDT AND FREESTYLE WORLD CUP TO AIR ON ESPN2, JUNE 19TH AT 3:00 P.M. EDT
ESPN has notified USA Wrestling with the scheduling information for two major international wrestling events which will air nationally this spring: the 2001 U.S. National Wrestling Championships and the 2001 World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling.
The U.S. National Wrestling Championships, originally held in Las Vegas, Nev., will air on ESPN2 on Friday, May 25th at 1:00 p.m. EDT. Action in freestyle, Greco-Roman and womens wrestling will be featured on the telecast.
The World Cup of Freestyle Wrestling, originally held in Baltimore, Md., will air on Tuesday, June 19th at 3:00 p.m. EDT.
Both of these shows are one-hour in length, and will including highlighted matches from the competitions.
ESPN has indicated to USA Wrestling that the ratings from these two shows will be evaluated to determine the amount of coverage that international wrestling will receive on the ESPN networks in the future.
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WRESTLING FANS WATCH THESE TWO BROADCASTS, OR SET THEIR VCR TO TAPE THESE TWO BROADCASTS. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT WAY THAT THE WRESTLING COMMUNITY CAN VOICE THE DESIRE TO SEE MORE WRESTLING ON TELEVISION.
