Elena and Alicia Mena

John Mena of the westside/westend st.paul wrestling club of minn. has two World Class Champian Daughters in his family. His daughters Elena and Alicia competed in the 2001 Women’s Wrestling Fila Junior National Championships and World Team Qualifier held at Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio on June 3rd. The two sisters from Minnesota Elena and Alicia Mena, both in the 75kg weight class , have been wrestling since the age of 6 or 7 and are now 20 and 18 years old are two of the pioneers in women’s wrestling here in Minnesota.

Winning state championships in Freestyle and Greco Roman Wrestling competing with the boys on the high school teams and clubs .

This year at the Sr. National Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada Alicia placed 3rd and received the most pins award. Her sister Elena placed 5th with a lose to her sister Alicia. Both young women qualified for the Sr. World Team Trials in Cincinnati, Ohio on 21 June and are all American.

At Dayton, Ohio Elena and Alicia won all their matches and faced each other in the championship match which Elena won by a pin.

Winning the 2001 Junior National Championship in making the 2001 Junior World Team she will be going to Switzerland to represent the United States in the Womens World Wrestling Championships. This year Elena has won over last years 2000 World Champion by a pin.
