TheMat.com, the official web page of the Amateur Wrestling Alliance, has released the first U.S. Women’s Wrestling College Rankings for teams and individuals.

Women’s wrestling is a growing sport in the United States on the college level. The International Olympic Committee has named women’s freestyle wrestling to the Olympic Games program.

Missouri Valley College was named as the top U.S. college team in the preseason rankings. Last season, Missouri Valley College won the team title at the U.S. Senior Women Nationals and the University Nationals.

Two athletes from Missouri Valley College earned No. 1 individual college rankings: junior Clarissa Chun at 101.25 pounds and junior Nina Vernon at 165.25 pounds. Chun is currently ranked No. 2 on the USA Wrestling Women’s National Team.

Lock Haven received the No. 2 team ranking, led by two No. 1 ranked individuals: freshman Erin Tomeo at 123 pounds and senior Sara McMann at 136.5 pounds. McMann is currently ranked No. 1 on the USA Wrestling Women’s National Team, and is a member of the 2001 U.S. Women’s World Team.

The Univ. of Minnesota-Morris, the first American college to create a varsity women’s wrestling team, is ranked No. 3. Rounding out the top five teams are No. 4 Cumberland College and No. 5 Pacific University.

Also receiving No. 1 individual preseason rankings are senior Patricia Miranda of Stanford at 112.25 pounds and freshman Toccara Montgomery of Cumberland College at 149.75 pounds. Miranda was a 2000 World silver medalist at her weight class. Montgomery is ranked No. 1 on the USA Wrestling Women’s National Team and is a member of the 2001 U.S. Women’s World Team.

Complete individual and team rankings are posted on TheMat.com, in the rankings section.

TheMat.com U.S. College Women’s Wrestling rankings will be published monthly on the following dates: Oct. 20, Nov. 20, Dec. 20, Jan. 20, Feb. 20, March 20, April 20, May 20.

Teams who are considered for ranking include both college varsity programs and college-affiliated club programs.

Athletes who are considered for ranking are eligible full-time college students, and are members of their college women’s varsity or club program, or a member of their college men’s wrestling team.

TheMat.com is also working along with Canadian college wrestling leaders to develop North American Women’s Wrestling College Rankings. Canada currently has 16 varsity college women’s wrestling teams, and compete in many events against U.S. women’s college programs.

TheMat.com has created a composite schedule for women’s college wrestling, which includes events from the U.S. and Canadian programs. Results from these events will be posted on a regular basis throughout the season.

Media outlets may reproduce these rankings only if they identify them as TheMat.com U.S. Women’s Wrestling College Rankings
