Betts named Outstanding Wrestler at UM-Morris Women’s Open

Katrina Betts was one of three UM-Morris individual champions, and was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after claiming the 101.25-pound weight class at the UM-Morris Women’s Open in Morris, Minn., Dec. 1.

Betts, a freshman, scored a technical fall and two pins in a four-athlete round-robin to claim the title. She pinned runner-up Kera Pemberton of Neosho County College in 45 seconds in the deciding match.

Also winning individual gold medals for UM-Morris were Keli Hinton at 112.25 pounds and Katie Downing at 149.75 pounds. Hinton pinned Dani Presley of Neosho County College in 2:45 for the title, while Downing captured the title uncontested.

Other individual champions included Sara Tolin of Neosho County College at 123.25 pounds, Sally Roberts of Pacific Univ. at 136.5 pounds and Elena Mena of the Minnesota Storm.

UM-Morris captured the team title, followed by Neosho County College. UM-Morris, coached by Doug Reese, was the first U.S. college to field a varsity women’s wrestling team, when it added the sport in the mid-1990s.

Palo Duro girls ranked No. 1 in wrestling

Palo Duro moved into the top spot in the state girls' wrestling rankings Sunday after finishing first in the Arlington Sam Houston tournament during the weekend.

The Lady Dons took first in the Sam Houston tournament with 114 points. Tascosa was second with 95 points and Caprock was third with 88 points.
