Shannyn J. Gillespie 4.9.09

U.S. Olympic Education Center freestyle resident athletes Helen Maroulis (55kg) and Adeline Gray (67kg) won gold medals and were crowned champions at the USA Wrestling Sr. National Championships held at the Las Vegas Convention Center Thursday April 8, 2009.

Maroulis and Gray, both high school seniors at Marquette Senior High School (MI), lead the USOEC freestyle team to a record 6 medals and earned the privilege to represent Team USA at the Sr. Pan American Championships in Peten, Guatemala April 21-26, 2009.

This marks the second time this year Maroulis and Gray have qualified to lead Team USA senior level women wrestlers in international competition. Maroulis and Gray gained invaluable experience 3 weeks ago in China at the Sr. World Cup.

World Cup is a contest of the top wrestling countries in the world and is wrestled in a dual meet or country versus country format. Maroulis amassed a 3-1 record and avenged an earlier loss while Gray also wrestled 4 matches winning 2 leading up to Sr. Nationals. Team USA placed 5th in the 2009 World Cup with a 2-2 won loss record.

Gray, 18 years old, started her year at the USOEC fresh off her Jr. World championship gold medal at 67kg last summer by winning gold medals this season at the NYAC Open and the Dave Schultz Memorial International. Gray owns victories this year over the 2008 World University Champion and USA's best women wrestlers.

Maroulis, 17 years old, won a bronze medal at last summer's Jr. World Championships at 51kg and has been wrestling well at 55kg lately; she bested 2009 World Cup team member for the 2009 Sr. National 55kg title. Maroulis also won the 2008 World Team Trials and represented Team USA at the Sr. World Championships. Maroulis owns victories over this year's Jr. World Champion and USA's best female grapplers.

This is the first time that 2 USOEC freestyle high school athletes have won Jr. National and Sr. National gold medals in successive years in women's freestyle. Maroulis was a Jr. National Champion last year at 116 lbs. while Gray was a Jr. National Champion at 153 lbs. Maroulis and Gray were also the only 2008 USA Jr. World Team members or medalists to gain championship gold medals at this year's women's senior nationals.

Super seniors Maroulis and Gray, who are also roommates at the USOEC, will graduate from their home states of Maryland and Colorado respectively later this year in May and June. Both have also traveled extensively this year with trips to Austria, Japan, and China. Gray plans to forgo the invitation to the Sr. Pan Am Championships to attend her high school prom.

By winning the women's senior nationals, Maroulis and Gray automatically qualified for USA Wrestling's senior national team which means for the next 6-9 months, they will receive a monthly stipend or increased funding for training, travel, and competitions here and abroad.

Next year will come soon enough for super seniors Maroulis and Gray...both have been invited to train at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO as resident athletes upon graduation from high school this year and have accepted this new challenge in their young lives.

Lampe, in impressive fashion, won a bronze medal and was selected to the Sr. Pan American Championships team for her efforts; Maroulis will join Lampe at the Sr. Pan Am Championships in Peten, Guatemala April 21-26, 2009.

Schuyler Brown, an NMU freshman, lost in the semi finals and battled back to her bronze medal with a victory over a two time Jr. World bronze medallist. Brown competed at 59kg which is one weight below her Jr. World weight class of 63kg; Brown represented Team USA at the 2008 Jr. World Championships.

Vonnie Carlson, a MSHS senior competing in her first Sr. Nationals, has been wrestling well all year after 8 months of rehabilitating a back injury she suffered her sophomore year in high school. Carlson won a bronze medal at 63kg.

Amber Miracle competed up 2 weight classes from her 2008 campaign and captured her first Sr. Nationals bronze medal at 67kg. Miracle is an NMU sophomore.

Sr. Nationals is the start of the Championship Season for the USOEC freestyle team. Next competitions include: University Nationals in Akron, OH April 23-25; Body Bar Nationals (for 15-20 year olds) in Colorado Springs, CO May 1-2, 2009; and the World Team Trials. All are qualifiers for Team USA world, continental, and international contests this summer.

In February, 1989, the U.S. Olympic Committee named Northern Michigan University (NMU) as the nation's only United States Olympic Education Center (USOEC). The USOEC's main focus is the resident athlete training program, where athletes actively train for the Olympic Games while also continuing their education.

Generally, athletes in this program must be nationally ranked and also approved by their national governing body (NGB), the USOEC, and NMU. The USOEC has resident athlete training programs in freestyle wrestling, boxing, short track speedskating, Greco-Roman wrestling, and weightlifting.

Five-time world champion Shoko Yoshimura has been selected for induction to the FILA international wrestling Hall of Fame, joining Yayoi Odagaki (nee, Urano) as the second Japanese woman to be inducted into the Hall. Yoshimura will also be the seventh Japanese wrestler to join the FILA Hall of Fame.

“When I started wrestling (in the mid-1980s), I wanted to be the first (Japanese) world champion. And, if there was a chance to go the Olympics, I wanted to go to the Olympics,” Yoshimura said. “But I never imagined that I would be in the Hall of Fame. This is like a dream.”
