FILA Weight Class Changes
12/20/2001 www.bcwrestling.com
The FILA has made significant changes in its Senior weight classes for all international competitions held under the sanction of FILA. Accordingly, the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association (CAWA) will be changing its Senior weight classes effective January 1, 2002 .
The new weight classes are as follows:
Senior Men: 55kg - 60kg - 66kg -74kg - 84kg - 96kg - 120kg
Senior Women: For all international competitions
48kg - 51kg - 55kg - 59kg - 63kg - 67kg - 72kg
For the Olympic Games only
48kg - 55kg - 63kg - 72kg
Please note that all other age groups remain unchanged with the exception of Junior Men where the heaviest weight class will be 120kg effective January 1, 2002.
These changes, necessitated by the FILA decision, mean that the FISU Qualifying event in Edmonton on February 13, 2002 will be run with the new weight classes as will the Golden Bear and Guelph Open carding tournaments.

2002 Letter from Eric Bettermann to all wrestlers and parents
http://www.mnusawrestling.org/pages/womenspage.html
December 17, 2001
Dear Wrestlers and Parents,
With the close of another year, the next season is coming upon us. I am excited about the recent news that Womens Wrestling will be added to the 2003 Olympic games. It is my goal to do what I can to make sure our state is represented in future Olympic games. I look forward to working with both our athletes and their parents this upcoming season.
I was recently appointed to an ad-hoc committee for USA wrestling. This committee will be looking at ways to improve the current structure of Womens Wrestling in the United States. These issues include, but are not limited to: Recruitment, Skill Development, Event Scheduling and Promotion. The United States wants to be a World Power in all styles of wrestling and I feel this is a good start.
I would like to ask all Wrestlers and Parents to help in the recruitment of new athletes. I will be sending letters with training site and sign up schedules to all YWCAs and other contact sport training sites (i.e. karate and judo training centers). Womens wrestling can and will be an exciting sport for all women to enjoy. If you know of any Women interested in participating, please encourage them to give wrestling a try and provide them with information about your local club as well as the MNUSA web site (www.MNUSAWrestling.org).
We anticipate bringing a team to the USGWA Nationals this spring. Any wrestler who would like to participate on team MN for this event needs to contact me no later February 15, 2002. We will be renting Vans and reserving hotel accommodations. Parents you are welcome to travel with us. I will know the cost for this trip, once I have confirmed how many people will be going. Uniforms will be available for purchase. We are working on an entire uniform package. The package will include: 1 mesh bag, 1 sweatshirt, 1 T-shirt, shorts, and two singlets (red and blue). The price will be between $65-$85.
It is my hope that we will have 3 regional training sites. One will be located in the Mpls-St. Paul area, another site will be located in the St. Cloud area and finally we are looking to have another site located in the Mankato area. Times and places will be posted on the web site as soon as they are finalized. If you plan on attending any of the National Events we expect that you attend a regional site or if you cannot make it to one, you contact myself and inform me where you are working out. I understand that many of our athletes train at their local clubs, but our practices will be on Wednesdays and should not conflict with local practices.
We will also be posting all events that we plan on attending as well as information on other tournaments. We will find out soon, if USA Wrestling will be adding a Womens event to the Junior Nationals held in Fargo, ND. If this is approved it will be the Womens (HS age level) National Freestyle Event. Also, the 3rd annual MN USA Womens open will be held independently from the State Freestyle tournament. We have not decided on a date yet, but we will have that posted soon.
I look forward to working with all of you this season, and if you have any questions please contact me at 651-503-5632.
