Hello wrestlers and parents,my name is Kip Flanik and I am the women's wrestling coach at Cumberland college.
The purpose of this post is to let you know something about myself and the school. It is important that you make your decision on where you want to go to school in the next month or so,so that you can maximize you financial aid options.
First and foremost, wherever you decide, stay involved in wrestling!!!!!! If we want the opportunities to continue to grow for women wrestlers,we must continue to grow as a sport! Obviously I think Cumberland is the best choice,if I didn't I wouldn't be here.
As a coach,I got started coaching middle school for one year, and then moved up to High school where I coached for 10 years as an assistant and 2 years as a head coach.
I got started coaching female wrestlers when Tina George came out for my team.It was because of Tina's courage, hard work and determination that I started to believe in women's wrestling, and eventually led me to be coaching here now at Cumberland. For those of you who don't know Tina, she is a three time World team member and now lives and trains in Colorado Springs for the Army team.
I have also been fortunate enough to be the coach of Toccara Montgomery, who was this years World silver medallist,FILA international wrestler of the year,USA wrestling female wrestler of the year,a finalist for the Sullivan award and a Pan American gold medallist.Toccara became one of the youngest national champions and World medallist this country has ever had. Both Tina and Toccara are wrestlers that I helped develop from day one.
The team I am coaching now is a combination of some really great wrestlers and some beginners.I am pleased to say that everyone of my girls has won at least one match this year, which is saying something considering several of them have never wrestled before coming here and most have never wrestled freestyle.
I am very pleased with the effort they have given me this year. I will gladly give you the phone numbers of all my girls parents, not just a select few.I encourage you to call them and ask what kind of a job they think I have done this year.
I am also glad to provide you many references throughout the wrestling community.
Or schedule is second to none! Next year it will be even stronger. It has NEVER been the case that my wrestlers or their parents have had to come out of their pockets to pay for a tournament,or anything else for that matter.Once you are here, the school pays for our tournament and equipment fees.
Both the school and myself believe in the school first, wrestling second philosophy. We are the only school that I am aware of that puts restrictions on the days of school wrestlers are allowed to miss.I support this plan, after all they should be here to get a degree first!
I will work with the girls from the first day they step on campus until the last day.I also will help coach them over the summer.I do this so that they can catch up to the other women wrestlers out there faster.Very few if any other coaches work with their girls over the summer.
The school and myself believe in no alcohol and a no drugs philosophy. The school is located in a dry county, which means there is no alcohol of any kind allowed in our county. We also conduct random drug tests.
I support both of these things 100% both for my wrestlers and myself.
Don't be afraid to ask questions to any of the schools you are interested in.I encourage you to verify everything they tell you,as I have personally witnessed some other coaches telling some half truths.
We have scholarships available. You combine this with financial aid and academic aid and we can put together a pretty good package for you.
What we are not is a school that tries to fill your heads with lies and half truths about our past accomplishments.
We are not only about recruiting 50 new girls a year, and then not trying to develop them.
Please feel free to call me at home,1-606-549-0808,at my office 1-606-539-4051,or e-mail me at kip444@prodigy.net
I STRONGLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO APPLY AT ALL THE SCHOOLS YOU ARE INTERESTED IN.Remember, just because you are accepted doesn't mean you have to go there. But this way,you can take advantage of the financial aid money that is dwindling away every day that goes by.
Thank you for your time,
Kip.
