The Spencer girls' wrestling team competed in the Iowa Girls' State Wrestling Tournament in Gilbert, IA on March 3, 2002. The tournament proved to be one of the largest girls' tournaments in the nation as 84 girls competed for medals. This was Iowa's third state tournament. In the first such tourney, 40 girls competed, and last year 60+ competed, so the tournament has expanded each year. Iowa has over 100 girls currently wrestling. In the 2000 Girls' State Wrestling Tournament, there were about 100 spectators. This year there were nearly 1,000.

The 21 Spencer girls hit the mat Sunday morning wrestling very aggressively. The competition proved tough as many Spencer girls competed against other girls who have been wrestling on boys' high school and middle school teams. The tournament was broken down into three divisions: high school, junior high school, and elementary school. Spencer had competitors in all three divisions.

The Spencer girls had more state champs, more runners-up, and more total place-winners than any other school or club in the state. Spencer was not finished with awards yet, however, as Paige Storm was voted "Most Outstanding Wrestler" of the 2002 Iowa State Girls' Wrestling Tournament in the Junior High Division. The Spencer girls never gave up in any matches and came from behind to win in several cases. They also won all of the close matches.

For some of the girls, this wraps up their season, but others are slated to compete in the Minnesota State Tournament March 17th and the U.S. Girls' National Tournament in Lake Orion (Detroit), Michigan on March 23-24. The high school girls who finished in the top two in the State are eligible to compete for Team Iowa. Iowa has been selected to compete in a dual team meet against seven other states which will be held Friday evening, March 22 in Lake Orion. Chosen to coach "Team Iowa" in the National meet were Spencer coaches Dave Storm, Darin Storm, Steve Quail, and Mick Ketchum.

WRESTLING AT NATIONALS

3/26/02

Girls wrestling hasn't caught on in Florida in a big way yet, but Pine Ridge has two young ladies who are making their mark in the sport.

Katie Parker and Yoiliana Jimenez both competed in the United States Girls Wrestling Association national tournament this weekend at Lake Orien, Mich. They were the only two representatives from Volusia County at the tournament.

Panthers coach J.J. Semrad said both girls demonstrated a solid work ethic this year in a male-dominated sport. Parker, a 118-pound competitor, wrestled and won several junior varsity matches this past season and was the Florida individual champion in her weight class in the Feb. 2 state tournament. Jimenez, a 114-pound grappler, was third in the state at the state tournament.

"They're both serious about wrestling and they work just as hard as our boys do. Plus, they're just great kids," Semrad says.
