UMM Wrestler places third in the Siberian Tournament
April 5, 2002
Krasnoyarsk, Russia - UM-Morris senior Katie Downing, a member of the US
National Team did what few college students do for their spring break. She
didn't go to Daytona,
Cancun, or even the Virgin Islands - Downing traveled to Krasnoyarsk, Russia
in central Siberia!
Downing's trip to Russia was not a vacation trip, but a business trip - to
wrestle in one of Asia's toughest and most competitive international
wrestling events, the Uregan International Open.
Downing traveled 12 hours to Moscow, then had to fly another seven hours to
Krasnoyarsk. From the airport it was another two hour bus ride. After
arriving, Downing had to weigh-in at 147 pounds / 67 kilos, then began
wrestling the very next day.
Downing went 4-1 in pool competition placing third in the tournament.
Downing opened the event with a pin over a Polish wrestler, then pinned a
Russian, lost a 6-5 match to another Russian, then beat another Russian 7-1.
U.S. Men's coach John Peterson, a former Olympic medalist in '72 and '76 had
to say this about the tournament, "As far as wrestling is concerned, it was
not a very successful trip. Competing in Russia immediately after the 2002
Winter Olympics was not the wisest thing to do. Because of the injustice
from the referees, it turned out to be a real eye opener for our teams."
The cold war lives on in sport.
Downing is wrapping up a very successful senior season at UM-Morris. During
her time here at UMM, Downing has been a three-time member of the US
National Team, won a silver medal at the 1999 FILA-Junior World
Championships and was the 2001 World Cup champion. Downing is looking to
train full-time after graduation, possibly moving to Colorado Springs to
train and live at the Olympic Training Center. Her complete focus is on the
2004 Olympic Games.
"If anyone can do it, it is Katie," says Head Wrestling Coach Doug Reese.
"Katie is the complete package. She is a fanatical trainer, a great
student, and a natural leader - not to mention a great friend to all her
teammates. She will be missed after graduation, but I have a feeling she
will be making her true mark in Athens, Greece in 2004 at the Olympic
Games."
Downing is majoring in History and Social Science and is from Pendleton,
Indiana.
