Burak wins national title, Dupont Colorado's first junior woman All-American

It was all Gabe Burak as he manhandled Puerto Rico's Franklin Gomez, 9-0, in the 91 pound freestyle championship to capture Colorado's first national title of the 2002 Cadet nationals. Congratulations Gabe, and to all the Colorado cadet All-Americans and wrestlers. Below is a recap of Gabes championship match.
1st period
Burak scored first on a double leg takedown with 1:37 left for a 1-0 lead, then turned Gomez with an ankle lace for a hand-to-hand one pointer, and a 2-0 lead. Burak spun behind for a one-point takedown at 40 seconds left and a 3-0 margin.
2nd period
Burak hit a double leg takedown, then ran Gomez over with a half nelson, for a two-point takedown and a 5-0 lead. Gomez attempted a number of upperbody hip toss, unsuccesfully. Burak added another two pointer from the feet for a 7-0 lead. With about 15 seconds to go, Burak had the legs in and scored a two-point exposure for the final 9-0 win.

Things were not so rosey for the juniors as all were eliminated from competition today.

In the womens competition Clair Dupont has earned All-American honors finishing 2nd in her pool and 3rd overall at 110 pounds. Oregon's Na' Tasha Umemoto won by tech fall over Clair in the battle for 3rd place.
