Timmins athlete wrestling her way to Olympic dream

Timmins’ Nicole Garceau will be travelling to Brock University to train with the women’s national wrestling team from Dec. 27 to 31. She hopes to qualify for the 2004 Olympics in women’s wrestling.

Local News - Timmins’ Nicole Garceau plans to wrestle her way into the Olympics and is confident she can do it.

As a white belt, Nicole Garceau shocked herself this weekend when she demolished all her rivals without breaking a sweat during her very first Judo competition.

“I wasn’t challenged during the tournament and ended up beating out five competitors who have yellow, blue and orange belts,” she said. “Not only did I win both the gold medal in my weight category, and the gold for beating out all those women, I was graded after the tournament then awarded an orange belt.”

The regional judo tournament was held at St. Charles School on Kent Street this weekend with about 80 to 90 spectators cheering on.

And now the 27-year-old is setting her sights for the apex of women’s wrestling.

I want to thank Scott Miller the Pacific University Head Wrestling Coach for allowing Samantha & NaTasha to enter. Both had a great tournament although both had injuries going into the tournament.

Na'Tasha Umemoto Look great technically... She was up 11-3 against Remticado and had her obviouslly pinned but the ref didn't get to the other side of her to actually see it and time ran out. She continued to wrestle aggressivly in the match instead of conserviative and made a slight mistake and threw Jill but landed on her own back. She went on to Tech the other people in her pool and the bronze match. Great job Tasha! Too bad we have to wait two more years to see you in USAW Women's tournaments. Expect her to be going to the Canadian tournaments though! She will only get tougher from here on out.

Samantha Looked strong as well. She dominated the entire bracket despite having not practiced for three weeks on a severally sprained ankle. She managed to pin all in her bracket except Lyle while protecting her ankle (that was a good thing).

I want to also thank Lyle, Kunimoto & Roberts from the Resident Training program for coming back to Pacific for the tournament. Also Menlo College and Simon Fraser brought quite a few girls as well! Next year it would be great to see all the colleges represented.
