LBHS's Mason is wrestling her way to the top

Sarasota Herald Tribune; Sarasota, Fla.; Dec 19, 2002;

Lemon Bay High School senior Tiffany Mason is making a name for herself
in girls wrestling, one of the fastest-growing high school sports in
Florida.

Mason was named Most Outstanding Wrestler at the Don Scaglione
Invitational Tournament last weekend at Ocala Forrest High. She won the 126-pound
title, sweeping her three matches in the all-female event, including a win
over defending state champion Dana Kearney. It was her second title in two
weeks -- she was also the 126-pound champ at the girls' Winter Springs
Invitational.

Mason credits a lot of her success to the workouts she does with the
Lemon Bay boys team. In practice, she wrestles against some of the boys,
including Frankie Faulseit, the team's top 126-pounder.

Faulseit did his part with a second-place finish in the boys'
prestigious Captain Archer Tournament, and goes into the break with an 8-3 record,
tied for best on the boys team with Anthony Fiore.

The Mantas will be off until January, but will be busy practicing over
the holidays. Greg Rivera, former Greco-Roman national champion, will
assist the Mantas and concentrate on demonstrating upper-body moves.

Freshman Callin Dwyer was pinned by the more experienced Laura Mirci at
112. Said D'Alessio: "Callin did not wrestle well against an experienced
female wrestler. I think wrestling a female is a different situation. I'm in
favor of female wrestlers but it's tough especially for a young freshman. But
it's a good situation because they need to understand that they need to
wrestle whoever is there."

The 2003 U.S. Women's Freestyle Winter Tour will begin on Jan. 18 with the Shaub International Tournament in Tourcoing, France and commence with the Klippan Lady's Open in Klippan, Sweden on March 9.

2002 World bronze medalist Kristie Marano (Albany, N.Y./ATWA) will compete at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. to lead the U.S. squad at the Shaub International Tournament. Also competing in the event are 2002 U.S. Women's World Team members Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Stephanie Murata (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Toccara Montgomery (Cleveland, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. The team will be coached by Troy Steiner of Madison, Wis. and Mike Marr.

Miranda will also compete at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, Feb. 1-2. She will be joined by 2002 World silver medalist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 55 kg/121 lbs. 2002 U.S. Women's World Team member Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids) will compete at 63 kg/138.5 lbs.

Joining them will be 2002 U.S. Women's World Team Trials champion Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112 lbs. The team will be coached by Rusty Davidson of Albuquerque, N.M.

Last year, McMann placed second at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and Katie Downing (Lock Haven, Pa./Gator WC) placed third at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. at the Ivan Yarygin Memorial International. Wong did not place in the tournament last year.

The Kiev Grand Prix will be held Feb. 21-22 in Kiev, Ukraine. Miranda and Murata will be joined 2002 U.S. Women's National Team members Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs., Mollie Keith (Aurelia, Iowa/Missouri Valley) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. and Satrinina Vernon (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. The 2003 Winter Tour will wrap up at the Klippan Lady's Open in Klippan, Sweden, March 8-9. The U.S. plans to have 18 women competing during this event, including Miranda, Wong, George, Murata, 2002 U.S. Women's World Team member Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs., McMann, Downing and Iris Smith (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. This squad will be coached by Joe Corso of Des Moines, Iowa and Terry Steiner.

Ingrid Medrano of Venezuela will join the U.S. squad at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. at the Klippan Lady's Open.

At last year's Klippan Lady's Open, McMann captured a gold medal at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. and Murata won a silver medal at 51 kg/112 lbs.

The U.S. did not send a women's team to the Shaub International Tournament and Kiev Grand Prix last year.

"The 2003 Winter Tour is vital to the development of our U.S. women's teams as we head into the final two years before the 2004 Olympic Games," stated Terry Steiner. "These four events all have good international competition. It is experience that you cannot get in the practice room, but it is also a gauge to see where we are at, what we have learned and what we still need to work on."

Three UM-Morris Women Wrestlers Place at the Gord Garvie; Goldsmith Claims the Silver Medal at 70 kilos

Thunder Bay, Ontario - Three University of Minnesota-Morris freshman women wrestlers sacrificed two weeks of their Christmas break to resume training and competition to place at the Gord Garvie Memorial Wrestling Festival at Lakehead University on Saturday, January 4th.

Megan Goldsmith (Black River Falls, WI) won the silver medal at 70 kilos (152 pounds). Goldsmith wrestled to a 3-1 record in the tournament.

Goldsmith won her opening round match versus Elysia Gignac by fall in 4:30. In the quarterfinals, Goldsmith won a 10-0 technical superiority over Emily McGague, then downed Crissa Holginity of the University of Regina by fall in 5:40 in the semifinals.

In the finals Goldsmith lost to World Cup champion and UMM alumnus Katie Downing of the Sunkist Kids. Downing won the gold medal for the third straight year with a first period fall versus Goldsmith.

Tabithia Ramsey (Austin, TX) placed third at 48 kilos (106 pounds). Ramsey wrestled to a strong 3-1 record on the day. Ramsey lost her opening match to the eventual champion Audrey Carrasco of the University of Manitoba 6-0. In the consolation bracket Ramsey defeated Kelly Robinson by fall in 1:15, then downed Lisa Lamour by fall in 1:50. In the consolation finals, Ramsey defeated Cynthia Stacey with a fall in 2:25 to capture the bronze medal.

Ranae Faaborg (Radcliffe, IA) enjoyed her best outing of the season placing fifth at 63 kilos (138 pounds). Faaborg lost her opening round match to Chantel Radbourne of the University of Regina 10-0. In the consolation bracket, Faaborg bounced back to defeat Marion Marks of the University of Manitoba. Trailing 8-1 in the first period, Faaborg hit a picture perfect "lateral" throw to earn the fall and the victory at 4:30. Faaborg then dropped a 10-0 decision to Ellen Macro of McMaster, then won by injury default over Amanda Gerhardt to place fifth in the tournament.

All three UMM women produced their best showing of the season. "They earned those results," said UMM head coach Doug Reese. "When you sacrifice, train hard and give up vacation time at home, you expect results. These athletes have character and desire unlike most. They will have outstanding careers here," said Reese.

The Cougars will resume training with two-a-day practices until school starts up again on the 13th. The next competition for the UMM women will be a major international competition, the FILA - Manitoba Open held at the University of Manitoba. Expected to compete are the national teams of the United States, Japan, France, Austria, Sweden, and Mexico.
