Joey Miller of woodward takes an opponent to the mat in a previous match and poses with Olympic gold medalist Rulon Gardner while training recently at the Olympic training center with the women's cadet nationals team.

Woodward Middle School wrestler Joey Miller is following her sport north this summer.

Miller, 14, has qualified for an El Reno-based boys’ wrestling team that will go to Fargo, N.D., next month for a program after spending three days at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater.

Miller will hold a car wash on the southwest corner of 22nd and Oklahoma Saturday from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. to raise money for the trip. She needs $750.

Since Miller will be the only girl on the team, her dad, Jerry Miller, will accompany her to North Dakota, mom Novell Miller said.

The nationally ranked wrestler has been hitting the mat since she was 6, winning meets across the country against both male and female opponents. She was named All-American in boys’ wrestling last year and was Outstanding Wrestler nationally in girls’ competition.

When she was 7, Miller was featured on the nationally syndicated television series, “Inside Edition” and now the program is asking to return for a follow-up, Novell Miller said. The youngster also has been featured in national publications.

Now wrestling at 91 pounds, Miller won a number of qualifying matches to be allowed to participate on the El Reno team that goes to North Dakota. She turned down opportunities to go to Austria and Venezuela this year, her mother said.

“Next year, maybe,” Novell Miller said. “Maybe the terrorism ans SAR'S will be under control.”
