Lakehead University will be staging the first Women’s Championship Cup of Wrestling on Nov. 14 and 15 at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse. This will be the largest university women’s duals tournament ever staged in Canada, featuring nine universities from Canada and one from the United States.

Joining host Lakehead will be Simon Fraser University, the University of Calgary, the University of Alberta, McMaster University, Brock University, Memorial University, the University of Western Ontario, the University of Saskatchewan, and Cumberland College from Kentucky. The tournament will be in the duals format, meaning it is run in head to head team competition with each individual match adding up to a final team score against each opponent school.

There will be two seeded pools of five teams and each pool will do a round robin schedule. There will be wrestling on four mats at the same time with duals beginning at the start of each hour, beginning at 9 a.m. each day of the two-day tournament.

Lakehead Head Wrestling Coach Francis Clayton has put this exciting new meet together in the hopes of providing a major duals venue for women’s university wrestling in Canada.

“Anytime you can host a high level event like this you bring a lot to the university and the community and I know this will be a great event for women’s university wrestling in Canada.”

Lakehead Athletic Director Tom Warden said that this new meet is a reflection of Lakehead’s commitment to women’s athletics and specifically to women’s wrestling. “This tournament is a very important step for Lakehead University and the sport of women’s wresting. Francis Clayton and Lakehead wrestling are one of the true builders in the sport of women’s wrestling and this is another indication of this leadership”.

Seedings for the tournament, and other meet information, will be announced at a major media conference to be held at Lakehead on Nov. 13.
