Trinity dancer high steps onto wrestling mat
Jennifer Adams makes believers out of teammates, coach

January 17, 2004

Jennifer Adams hears comments about her presence on the Trinity
wrestling team. She hears surprise that the drill-team dancer has donned a
singlet and is twisting on a wrestling mat when she's not making a fancy step on
the dance floor.

She also hears negative comments, including that the 102-pound junior
shouldn't be wrestling.

"They would tell me. 'That's a man's sport,' or worse than that. They
say that I'm too, 'girlyish,' " Adams said. "I don't care what people
think."

Adams said she does care about her wrestling and has been serious about
it since she joined Trinity's team last season.

She got serious when she got tired of just watching wrestling. Adams'
younger brother has competed in wrestling for years.

"The more tournaments I went to, the more I thought, 'I want to go out
there and do that,' " Adams said.

Adams joined a Trinity wrestling team that has not had many girls on it
the last two seasons, varying between three and five wrestlers.

She has made friendships with the girls on the team, who make
kind-hearted jokes about her dancing background. Adams has been involved with
dancing since the fourth grade, and she said hopes to be a member of Trinity's
dance group – the Troy-Annes – next fall.

"When she does wrestling moves, we'll joke [with] her like she's
dancing," said Jessi Turner, a 128-pound teammate. "She'll move and we'll say,
'five, six, seven, eight ... one, two, three, four.' "

First-year Trinity coach Kelsey Lynes said that when he first saw
Adams, he thought she wouldn't last two weeks. After two weeks however, Lynes
said he knew she was in for the long haul.

Lynes said he hears comments often about people wondering what Adams
was doing on the wrestling team.

Lynes said. "If you can get through wrestling, there's nothing in life
you can't handle. You can't stereotype wrestlers."

There have been other parts of wrestling that have been frustrating for
Adams.

Turner is the closest in weight class to Adams, putting Adams at a
competitive disadvantage. Adams has also had a lack of competition this
season, competing in four matches with a 2-2 record.

Turner said she senses frustration from Adams frequently. It's a
frustration that at least one of her male teammates notices as well.

"Sometimes she gets a little down on herself. You can see she's
frustrated because there aren't many girls on the team," said Adam Purcell, a
103-pound freshman. "We try to give her our support. She still gives it her all,
110 percent."

Adams said she has had pain she would never experience as a dancer.

"My arms and elbows get twisted around all the time," Adams said.
"Right now, my muscles around my rib cage are sore."

Adams participation in wrestling and dancing is part of a busy school
schedule. She is also involved with student council and the Fellowship
of Christian Athletes.

Adams said that since she has been involved with wrestling, her
attitude toward grades in school has changed and improved.

"It used to be that I would do anything involved with school except
study. I would play soccer, run, dance anything but study," Adams said. "I'm
having trouble with algebra now, but most of the time I can get A's and B's."

Turner said it would probably take Adams another year before she is a
serious contender to qualify for the state meet. The top girls
wrestlers in each weight class from each region qualify for the state meet in Austin
next month.

Adams said she would continue wrestling next year and perhaps in
college. She said she would like to go to Texas or Iowa for college. Iowa has
had one of the best men's wrestling program in the nation over the last 30
years.

"I heard Iowa has good dance teams," Adams said. "Maybe they can start
up a women's wrestling program at Iowa. I would like that."
