Henderson, Johnson qualify for state in wrestling

EL RENO – Two Boomer wrestlers will be competing in the Class 4A state tournament this weekend.

D. J. Henderson, a 171-pound senior, finished second in the regional at El Reno Saturday while Matt Johnson was third at 160 pounds. Henderson will be making his second trip to state and Johnson his third.

Despite high hopes going in, no other Boomer wrestler qualified for state. John Davis was sixth at 119 pounds.

Johnson will open his state bid against Dustin Davis from Tulsa East Central while Henderson opens against Treman Morris of Tulsa Hale.

Johnson won four of five matches in the regional, losing to Michael Eichenhauer of Lawton MacArthur 4-3 in the semifinals. Eichenhauer scored in the final 10 seconds for the victory.

After the loss, Johnson beat Eric Burrell of Carl Albert and Charles Nailon of Western Heights to finish third.

Henderson won three matches, two by fall, to reach the finals where he lost to Josh Stapleton of El Reno.

The state tournament begins Friday at 10:30 a.m. at the State Fair Arena.

White wins junior high state championship

OKLAHOMA CITY – Zach White captured the state junior high wrestling championship by sweeping through five matches at the Junior High All-State competition recently

White, wrestling at 100 pounds, scored three pins, including a 45-second fall in the championship match. He started with a fall in 2:53, then, got a pin in 12 seconds. In the quarterfinals, he won 7-2 over an Enid wrestler that wound up third.

In the semifinals, White routed the top-seeded wrestler 11-4, when ended the championship match in under a minute.

He was the only Woodward wrestler to place in the tournament.

Boomer wrestlers edge Enid

Three consecutive falls to finish the match lifted the Boomers to a thrilling 41-36 Senior Night wrestling victory over Enid at Boomer Fieldhouse Tuesday.

With three matches left, the Boomers trailed the Plainsmen 36-23.

A few minutes late they had the dual victory.

Jake Jones, a senior, flattened Daniel Crist in 55 seconds, then junior Matt Johnson rolled up a 20-8 lead before pinning Cody Roberts in 3:35 to pull the Boomers within a point.

Senior D. J. Henderson then capped his home career with a 45 second fall over Bryan Trevino to wrap up the dual. Henderson took Trevino to his back for an early five-point move and quickly finished the match.

Enid opened with four consecutive falls.

Three of the pins came quickly, but Aaron Padgett had to rally from an 8-0 deficit to beat Jacob Morgan in 5:41.

Morgan took Padgett to his back twice in the first period, but the Enid grappler battled back and took a 16-13 lead before getting the fall.

Caleb Lewis gave the Boomers their first victory with a 9-0 win over Zac Layne, then the Boomers got two forfeits while Enid picked up one.

At 135 pounds, Kevin Branine rolled Josh Ellis 14-4, then David Flores beat Allen Hessley 12-7.

Brad Velasquez got a fall for Enid to make it 36-23, but the Boomers owned the rest of the dual.

In the junior high dual, Enid recorded a 46-19 victory.

Jon Herring and Joseph Cox picked up falls for the Boomers, Joey Miller had a major decision and heavyweight Derek Branson got a 1-0 victory.

Boomers drop duals to Eagles

The Boomers won some tough individual matches, but lost the team battle in junior high and high school wrestling against the Weatherford Eagles Friday.

At home for the first time since the Christmas break, the Boomer high school team dropped a 45-24 decision and the junior high lost 41-18.

Weatherford’s fast start was the difference in the high school match.

The Eagles, ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A, opened up a 27-0 lead before the Boomers broke through at 135 pounds on Kevin Branine’s pin of Koby King in 3:38.

Weatherford’s Mark Tannehill won a 3-2 overtime thriller over David Flores when the Woodward freshman couldn’t escape in a 30-second sudden victory overtime.

After a pin at 145 pushed the Eagle lead to 36-6, the Boomers put together a comeback.

Michael Comstock recorded a pin in 59 seconds, then Matt Johnson edged Tyler Selman 4-3 in a battle of top-flight 160-pounders. Johnson fell behind 3-2, but reversed Selman in the third period and rode out the match.

At 171, Jake Jones pinned Justin Sides in 40 seconds, then D. J. Henderson beat Dayton Pritchard 7-0 to make it 36-24.

Weatherford, though, won the final two matches to wrap up the team victory.

In the junior high dual, the Boomers got victories from Zack White, Joseph Cox and Kyle Simpson plus a forfeit win by Stephen Wilson.

Weatherford had four falls in the match and received two forfeits.

The Boomers lost two matches in the final moments as Derek Branson was edged 2-1 on a late reversal and Joey Miller lost 4-2 in overtime. Miller moved up to the 102 position because Weatherford had no 94 pound wrestler.

Woodward will host Enid on Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. It will be Senior Night for the high school team.

WHS wrestlers second in district duals

EL RENO – Woodward finished second in the District 4A-1 duals here Tuesday, beating John Marshall and Bishop McGuinness while losing to national powerhouse El Reno.

Matt Johnson and Caleb Lewis won all three of their matches to lead the Boomers.

“We had a lot of fun, I thought,” said Woodward coach Greg Johnson. “We were the only ones to score on El Reno and we would have liked to won a couple more.

“Against John Marshall, Kevin Branine was tied with nine seconds left, led his kid up then got a takedown in the final seconds to win, and John O’Dell won his first high school match.”

D. J. Henderson, David Flores, Michael Comstock, John Davis, Ramon Marin, O’Dell and Branine all won two matches

Woodward’s junior high beat El Reno, 39-36.

The junior high wrestlers will take part in the Western Oaks Tournament this weekend.

WATONGA - Five Woodward High School wrestlers placed in the Watonga Tournament held Friday and Saturday.

Matt Johnson won all four matches to take first place in the 160-pound division. Johnson pinned three of his opponents.

Jake Morgan was second at 189 pounds, D.J. Henderson third at 171 pounds and John Davis and Michael Comstock sixth at 119 and 152 pounds.

Woodward goes to El Reno for the District duals Tuesday, taking on McGuinness at 6 p.m., El Reno at 7 p.m. and John Marshall at 8:15 p.m.

PERRY – Woodward junior Matt Johnson finished third to lead the Boomer wrestling contingent in the Perry Tournament of Champions over the weekend.

Johnnson, a 160-pounder, won three of four matches to place third, beating Cody Hill of Marlow 8-7 in double overtime in the third place match.

No other Boomer wrestler medaled, though D. J. Henderson came close at 171 pounds, splitting four matches.

Jake Jones and John Davis also won matches for the Boomers.

Woodward goes to Geary for matches against the host team and Burns Flat-Dill City today.

KINGFISHER – The Woodward Junior High wrestling squad finished third in the Kingfisher Tournament Saturday, winning the first team trophy in the junior high program’s history.

Woodward scored 124 points. Hobart won with 168 points and Weatherford was second with 160.5 points.

Joey Miller won first place for the Boomers. Zach White was third. Ramon Marin, Jimmy Blevins and Derek Branson all finished fourth. Jacob Radke and Joseph Cox were fifth and Stoney Swearingem sixth.

Boomer wrestlers drop close dual to Altus

A fast start wasn’t quite enough for the Boomers as Altus overcame a 30-3 deficit to win 42-30 in high school wrestling at Boomer Fieldhouse Thursday.

The Boomers scored pins in five of the first six matches but Altus won the last seven matches of the dual. Two forfeits by the Boomers were the difference in the match, giving Altus the 12-point victory margin.

Kevin Branine, Jake Jones, Michael Comstock, Matt Johnson and Jacob Morgan all recorded quick pins for the Boomers. Branine and Johnson pinned their foes in less than a minute.

Morgan’s fall put the Boomers up 30-3 after just six matches.

The Bulldogs came back with a decision and four consecutive pins, plus the decisive forfeits.

In the junior high dual, Woodward won 48-24 with pins from Joey Miller, Zach White, Joseph Cox and Jimmy Blevins. The Boomers also received forfeits at three weights while forfeiting one weight.

Miller flattened her opponent in just 57 seconds while White needed 1:33 for a fall. Blevins also got a pin in under a minute.

Woodward’s junior high wrestlers go to the Kingfisher Tournament today and Saturday.

Next action for the high school squad is Dec. 12-13 at the Perry Tournament.

Wrestlers open against Altus

Woodward High School opens its wrestling season tonight with junior high and high school duals against Altus at Boomer Fieldhouse.

The junior high dual starts at 6 p.m. with the high school following at approximately 7 p.m.

The Boomers have competed in two open tournaments, placing in a number of weight classes at both the junior high and high school level.

The high school dual will pit the Boomers against a traditional power in the Bulldogs, who are usually a top-10 type team.

“I really don’t know much about them right now,” said Boomer head coach Greg Johnson. “They have a sophomore at 125 or 130 pounds who was a state qualifier last year.

“I haven’t seen their big guys because they were still in football when we saw them at one of the open tournaments. I just know they’re always tough.

Three Woodward wrestlers won championships at the Yukon Open Saturday.

Joey Miller and Zach White won titles in the junior high division and D. J. Henderson won his weight class in the high school division.

Woodward competitors also recorded a number of third, fourth and fifth place finishes.
The Boomers will compete in an open tournament in Norman on Saturday before
opening the regular season Dec. 4 with a home dual against Altus.

"We started off pretty good, I thought," said Boomer head coach Greg Johnson. "We still had 20 kids wrestling late in the afternoon and it was a good way to start the season." ,
