Boomer wrestlers place second in final home meet of the season
Scott Ford woodwardnews.net1/25/06

Zach White of Woodward puts the squeeze on his opponent Tuesday in the Boomers final home event of the season. The Boomers wrestled against Enid and Kingfisher. They lost to Enid 40-20 but defeated Kingfisher 51-21. Scott Ford
It was senior night at the Boomer Fieldhouse as the Woodward wrestlers took to the mat in the final home matches of the season against Kingfisher and Enid.
Four senior wrestlers and a manager were honored before the final varsity match of the night. As the seniors met their parents at center mat and gave their mothers a flower and a hug, the emotions of this being their last home competition was written all over their faces.
Michael Comstock won both of his matches. In his first match, he pinned his opponent in 4:55 and in his second match Comstock won by decision 2-1. Luis Baeza went 1-1 on the night with a win by pin and a loss by points. Darby Rivera also won one and lost one. His win came by way of forfeit and his loss was by pin in 4:15, and John Davis suffered two losses both of which came by points. The first loss was 10-0 and the second 3-2.
In the first match, Enid and the Boomers began the match by exchanging wins for the first seven weight classes before Enid would seal the deal with four out of five victories to finish the match winning 40-20 At the 160 weight Kyle Simpson lost 5-3 to give Enid a 4-0 lead. Comstock, however came back with a pin at 171 pounds for six points to put the Boomers up 6-4. Earl Hunt then lost 5-3 to put Enid back on top 7-6, but Derrick Branson came through with a 5-1 win to swing the score back over to the Boomers side 9-7. Heavyweight John ODell got pinned to give Enid the four point lead, 13-9. The 103 weight class had no wrestlers. Joey Miller wrestled 112 pounds and got a forfeit for a 15-13 Boomer lead. Davis lost 10-0 putting Enid back on top 17-15. Then the Boomer had three straight losses in the 125, 130 and 135 pound weights and Enid went up 30-15. Zach White stopped the losing streak with a 19-3 rout to close the gap to 30-20, but then the Boomers lost the final two matches and fell to Enid 40-20.
I didnt realize that Enid was this tough, said coach Greg Johnson.
The Woodward junior high team showed Enid no mercy as they pinned the Plainsmen 48-8.
Against Kingfisher, the Boomers found more success and won the high school match 51-21. Woodward won nine of the 13 weights and had one weight with a double forfeit.
Comstock got the winning started with a 2-1 victory and a 3-0 lead. Branson, ODell Miller followed suit. Miller and ODell won by forfeit and the wins gave the Boomers a 21-0 lead. Woodwards first loss came at the 112 pound weight where they did not have a wrestler and the other two losses were at the 135 and 130 weight classes.
The junior high team also defeated Kingfisher by a score of 37-30. Everybody did a good job on the junior high team, said coach David Henderson.
The Boomers will take to the mat again Friday and Saturday in the Chickasha Tournament. Following that event the Boomers will have only two more events to compete in before the regional tournament begins on Feb. 17-18. The time and location for the regional tournament will be announced later.

I am nervous about this dual, said coach Greg Johnson. Most of the team is ready to go, but there are still a few that I am not too sure about.
The Woodward wrestling team is off to battle for a chance to attend the state duals tournament in February in Tulsa. Whoever wins the District Duals tonight in Harrah gets the nod to take their team. Noble and Carl Albert are the other teams besides the Boomers and Harrah.
Woodward will wrestle against Harrah first at 4 p.m. then against Noble at 5:30 p.m. and finish with Carl Albert at 7 p.m.
Johnson said that he feels his team could win the event.
I ran a scenario with us beating Harrah 30-27. Against Noble, I have us tied at 30, so I will need someone to step up and get us another win and against Carl-Albert we should win 30-27. But that is if everything goes as planned, Johnson said.
Johnson said at 103 pounds, the Boomers would win two of three matches for sure, but Joey Miller would have to work real hard to get all three wins. Woodward does not have anyone wrestling at 112 pound class. At the 119 class, Johnson believes that John Davis will win all three of his matches and at 125 pounds, he said it could go either way.
Im not sure what will happen at the 125 class, that depends on the wrestler, he said. At the 130 pound division, Johnson said the Boomer wrestler would win two of three and possible all three matches, but has some concerns at the 135 pound weight.
Zach White should and probably will win all three of his 140 pound matches and we will get two of three in the 145 class, said Johnson.
The 152 pound wrestlers should win two of three and Michael Comstock should win all three of his 160-pound matches according to the coach. The only real concern for Johnson is at the 171 pound weight, as he said he was not sure how Woodward would fair.
In the weight class 189, 215 and the heavy weights, Johnson said his wrestlers should each win two and possibly all three.
We have a decent shot at winning the dual. If we were to win it would be big time for Woodward wrestling. Thats because we are the underdogs going in, Johnson said. The only team that will not overlook us will be Harrah, thats because they have seen us wrestle already.
Johnson said he is concerned that his team may make some silly mistakes on the mat.
We have a lot of young wrestlers on the team, he said.
Harrahs wrestling team concerns Johnson in the 215-pound class.
Their 215 pounder is a good wrestler, said Johnson. Noble is strong at the 103, 112, 215 and in the heavy weight class. They are strong at both ends,
The coach said that he did not know to much about Carl-Albert.
They could be the sleeper team, we will just have to wait and see, said Johnson.
Yes I am nervous about the event. Our lower level wrestlers need to stay off their backs and our upper level wrestlers need to put their opponents on their backs, Johnson said.
